Write Poetry In UML

Martin writes "We'd like to announce the first Unified Modeling Language Poem Contest - UMLyrics 2004. Realize the power and shortcomings of UML by writing new or paraphrasing existing poems with UML. The winner is determined with a Google-based voting system - have fun!"

    I remember perl poetry contests. They were awesome. I highly doubt, however, that this UML contest will be as good.

    The main things that perl had going for it in regards to the contest was the type of people who program perl (many interested in language), the type of language perl is (amorphousa and varied), and finally the perl community (jovial and witty). When I think UML I think of a language that's anything but poetic. It's too structured. In fact that's what makes it useful as a language!

    I just can't see the opportunity for a fraction of the creativity as the perl contest in this contest :-/

      Look on the bright side. When a Perl poetry contest is mentioned on Slashdot, the comments are filled with bad Perl poems. Somehow I don't see that happening this time... ;)

      You know, if you had only (quite reasonably) wrapped that in HTML containing a link back to the poetry contest and the name, you would have almost certainly won thanks to the link from Slashdot and its likely impact on PageRank :-).

      For anyone who doesn't figure it out on their own, the poem is a BMP file and so at least on the Mac it doesn't display in a browser. Find it as a downloaded file. Weird.

      I have to say that I don't think UML poetry is going to catch on, based on the few examples I've seen. Even with yours being the best :-).

    3rd stanza, It doesn't scan, its blind verse and has no iambic time.

    *THE* UML?

    (In case you don't know, the recommended way to reference UML is "The UML". You only see this in UML books written by the UML spec authors, and in the forward of other UML books where they say they aren't going to do it.)

    But the quoted poem line on there is incorrect. The Gertrude Stein line is "Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose." as seen here and other places.

    ...is a witty method of increasing traffic on site which's only content are ads for UML products, in a plain hope some contesters will massively buy those products to help them in the contest itself.

    That's about how a markets for completely useless products create themselves.

    If someone believes UML itself is not an idle idea just for morons, please enlighten me. And yes, I was forced to use Jackson's Structured Diagramming at work some twenty years ago or so. Those days, we wrote poetry in Cobol.

      UML is very useful in the enterprise. You will see a bunch of new tools in the near future that will allow the export of business process in UML 2.0. You can then take these processes and import them into tools such as websphere, weblogic, MS Whitehorse, etc, and build applications based on these processes. This can be very very handy.
