Registrars Rebel Against ICANN Budget

I_am_Rambi writes "According to an article on News.com.com, ICANN is having to rework their budget. 'ICANN, based in Marina del Rey, Calif., is facing a tight deadline to revise its record $15.8 million budget to placate a growing number of rebellious registrars united in opposition to a new fee structure....Fearful that the combined fees could top $19,000 and put them out of business, 75 smaller registrars have banded together to protest the budget.'"

    ICANN's being crooked again. Theyve turned more FROM a org to a CORP.

    What would happen if the other root servers just once decided to remove them from the ROOT-LIST? COM would most assuredly get rebuilt, hopefully under an open management scheme.

      That's exactly what I want to see happen. The major problem with the internet is that it relies on centralized DNS systems. As private companies take over this function with localized customization, the entire system will grow more robust and less tolerant of shenanigans.

      You don't have to use the standard root servers. Use Opennic for example. The only thing you lose is the ICANN .biz domain, which is mostly spam anyway.

      ICANN has always been a corporation. It used to be somewhat less corrupt, or so I'm told... But to say "the other root servers" doesn't mean anything in the way you seem to be suggesting it, as ICANN has dominion over ALL the root servers. (At least those in the "standard" US Govt. DNS hierarchy.) You may be thinking of Verisign, which runs the .com registry, and could also use some serious overthrowing.

      Ideally, we should all switch to an /alternate root/ system, which eschews ICANN in favor of an entirely different set of root nameservers (typically also including ICANN-registered domains); in practice, that would require action on a massive scale which simply isn't likely to happen. (Not to mention the fact that most of the alternate roots have gone bust, been bought, or become stupid and corrupt like ICANN.)

      The 5 first alphanumerically ordered registrar names made me chuckle... they start with ! and #.

      Some of those who are protesting are domain squatter brokers rather than the squatters themselves. Drug Dealer::Drug User, I guess that make ICANN the wholesalers...

      Speaking of squatters, here is an interesting tidbit -
      In the earlier days of San Francisco, the larger-than-half Western section of the city was all sand dunes and believed to be unbuildable. But rich people being rich people, they *paid* poor people to squat on various plots of Western SF land so that they could lay claim to them.

      Around the same time the topic of Golden Gate Park was being discussed:
      It is interesting to note that Frederick Law Olmsted, the landscape architect of Central Park in New York, was first called in to evalutate the prospect of creating a park in the western sand-dune-strewn regions of San Francisco, and considered it an impossible task. He later sent a nice letter to Hall acknolweding his having proven him wrong so marvellously.

    www.icannwatch.org is recommended reading, especially for anyone who is concerned about the way ICANN is heading. But I wouldn't claim that it is always even-handed.
