Yet another PR/Marketing driven story just to drive sales. Why can't these interesting people be interview or written about when it's not tainted by the desire to pitch their new product. And no, this is not limited to games.

Nice to see /. helping EA out in their campaign...

  Why the hell would they want to give interviews when they don't have a new product to promote? In addition why would the press want to interview somebody who didn't have a new product coming out, what would they talk about: the weather?

  I have no new products to pitch, yet I assure you that I am interesting. In order to make myself more desirable and neutral, I'm involved in a project at work that I cannot mention to people I don't know personally and certainly not to the press. Let me assure you, in 3 years time you will have wished to know my story now!
  
  I will have nothing to discuss aside from my perspective on world politics (on which I do not claim to be educated, only opinionated), my opinion on recent and near-future computer architecture / semiconductor fabrication, and my 10 month old daughter (who is walking now).

The Sims is obviously a work of a demented genious. I wonder how many times this guy went swimming as a kid, only to discover that, when he tried to get out, someone had built a brick wall around the pool...

It was addictive for a few days, then it just dies out and it's just another game sitting on the shelf. I can't imagine that Sims 2 will be much better.

Ok, sorry if this is just nitpicking, but some of the article struck me as... well... strange.
"strike a chord with women, gay men and others with little time for dungeons or dragons" (followed shortly by) millions around the world are bristling with excitement at the prospect of... Sims 2"
also, this caught my eye:
"The Sims is a real-time strategy game"
and this:
he does have a hinterland, devoted to 'reading, skiing, scheming' - that just sounds funny.
Well, I know I speak for all of us when I say that my hinterland is scheming and bristling at the prospect of this new RTS.

  Ok, we get it. It's obvious by now. The man who invented the Sims had no life and needed to invent his own. Thanks for rubbing it in. Isn't it bad enough he has to associate with gay men to be popular? You are the sickest of the sick. I bet when you meet a midget you break out a tape measure and record it on a little steno pad in your breast pocket. And while you write it you give a little, "uh, huh."

  I can confirm that gay men enjoy playing other games as well. After all I always see people on CounterStrike calling each other 'Faggots' and 'Totally Gay'. Infact I see that so much that I would go to estimate about 90% of CounterStrike players must have a homosexual sexual preference.

  I've got to say that as a gay male my sexuality has never been a factor in what games I play. And frankly why are homosexuals even a demographic when talking about games? I don't buy different books than straight men, I don't buy different music than straight men, and I don't buy different games than straight men. Really, the only industry that I approach differently because I'm gay is the porn industry.

  I can confirm that gay men enjoy playing other games as well. After all I always see people on CounterStrike calling each other 'Faggots' and 'Totally Gay'. Infact I see that so much that I would go to estimate about 90% of CounterStrike players must have a homosexual sexual preference.
  That's probably because Jesus loves everyone except homosexuals and non-believers.
