European World of WarCraft Beta Begun

code-e255 writes "The European beta of World of WarCraft started a few hours ago. For those who signed up for this, the American WoW Web-site claims that all keys have been emailed out already; however, the European ones stated the process will take a few days."

Actually, the majority of the WoW beta testers claim that the game's, even in its beta stage, superiour to the current competition. If I were in the beta, knew the game, and anticipated the game as much as all of them, I'd probably write you an essay about why I believe you're mistaken. Unfortunately, I'm not in the beta yet, though, so I'm afraid I can't do that. :(

Actually, that's bulls***. If I were in the beta, I most definitely wouldn't be wasting my time suring around on ./ Games. :p

One thing to note is that the positive reactions you see from the beta testers are from people who are, well, still playing the game. I was in the alpha since November and burt out around July. I still log in now and then to see what's new and give feedback but I'm not a rabid fan posting on the forums. I know many others who have also quit but you generally don't hear from these people on blizzard forums.

On the other hand, WoW has really perfected the Everquest style game. It's a pretty fun and easy game I think it will be very popular, but not everyone wants to play a game that is essencially a level grind.

I'm not in the beta yet, though, so I'm afraid I can't do that. :(

This isn't necessarily a bad thing. If you think you'll really like the game, it may be more enjoyable to play the polished retail version than the beta.

Of course, playing the beta is *free*, whereas the polished product will cost mucho dinero. I hate to be all Marxist and bring up economics, but in this case (or any MMOG, for that matter), economics is key - I refuse to keep on paying for a game that I've already purchased.

I wouldn't mind paying a small fee to get to play the WoW beta for a few months. But the prices WoW accounts go for, at least on eBay, are way too high (a couple of hundred USD).

If anyone has a spare key and wants to give it to a good fellow, and not some random l33t d00d, please mail me at code_e at hotmail dot com. I'll even play a Priest and be your newbie character's slave for a week, or something. :P

  5. The grind... by achacha · · Score: 1

I just wish MMORPG designers and developers try to make their games interesting past the initial learning curve. The sad fact is that many become level grinds. Having played EverQuest, Anarchy Online, Dark Ages Of Camelot, Horizons, and City Of Heroes... I am just about ready to give up on the whole MMORPG arena. It's a level grind 80% of the time (if not more). But as long as these games are designed for everyone, they will suffer inbalances and have the level grind built in (some people actually like the mindless level grind, some people are mindless...)
