Dragon's Lair III Announcement and Demo

An article on Blue's News brings the happy news that a third game in the Dragon's Lair franchise is in the works. There are screens, a press release, and a demo of the game to be had. From the press release: "Dirk the Daring, the brave yet bumbling knight, is ready to venture back into the Lair in this adventure! The Evil Wizard Mordroc has again kidnapped the fair Princess Daphne and Dirk is her only hope. Save the princess, defeat Mordroc, and watch out for the treachery that lies at every step!" Good to know the genre hasn't changed since the last game.

Oh dear god no, what the hell have they done to a classic game?

Could they not have possibly released this so-called game as an addon for Dragons Lair 3D? That's all it is... just some new levels played through and recorded to be like the old Dragon's Lair. This is a sad day, they're ruining the classics again and again.

You'd think that you would be just a little leery of letting your princess walk around alone after the first time she gets kidnapped. But letting her go out after getting taken twice? It's like an open invitation!

dirk is in a room with colored platforms that go up and down. it's mostly smoothly animated. you just hit L/R/U/D to move to the platform that blinks yellow. i made it across the chasm (about 15 moves) first try. it was very easy due to the blinking yellow. at the end the damsel's voice says "dragon wings! these will help you fly!" and it shows dirk "flying" (sort of waving his arms around, looked dumb) and going through a door.

not a very good bit of gaming, even for a huge fan of DL (which i am, i own the DL classic cdroms). if this is one of the better scenes in the game, don't expect much.

could be worse - at least it looked like animated video. the 3d RPG from a couple years ago was horrible.

Actually, it took me a few times to see where the second move was but from there it WAS pathetic.

The worst part is, the scene isn't even a high-poly pre-rendered one. the columns in between the platforms are eight sides and a texture. There's no decoration to speak of other than a few torches. It's like a real-time game from 1997 compressed into movie format.

Here's what it is: video captures of somebody playing the Dragon's Lair 3D game from 2002 (which was a Tomb Raider style game) which are then used in the same manner as the animations in the original Dragon's Lair game - namely, you make a decision, and based on that decision, a movie plays which either shows you dying or moving toward another decision point.

You can get the PC version of "Dragon's Lair 3D" for about 7 bucks used on Amazon. The game got poor reviews and I think this must be part of an effort to recoup some $$$. (Personally, I loved "Dragon's Lair 3D", but I was among the few.)

"Dragon's Lair 3" is basically "Dragon's Lair 3D" without the latter's main selling point - being able to fully control the character and move around in three dimensions.

I seem to remember that there was one (The Curse of Mordread?), and it was completed alongside DL2. The site that carries the old DL emulator might have more info.
