New Edition of the Daedalus Project

Nick Yee writes "The Daedalus Project is an ongoing survey study of MMORPG players. Over the past 5 years, more than 35,000 MMORPG players have participated in the study. A new issue is now available at the Daedalus Project site. Some highlights from the current issue include: About 26% of female players are introduced to the game by a romantic partner, compared with 1% of male players, An extensive interview with the leader of a top-ranked WoW guild (they just killed Ragnaros recently), and Narratives from players who play with their romantic partners, family members, friends and co-workers illustrating the good and bad things about playing with someone you know in real life."

Well, its the fifth year of this study, so I guess they are desperate for questions.

About 26% of female players are introduced to the game by a romantic partner, compared with 1% of male players

Ok, the 26% is interesting...but the 1% of men? Mod the survey -1 nonInsightful :)

I was thinking can we get a DUHUH! More men than women play this sort of game and statistically most people are Heterosexual so a man playing this game who wants to keep his wife happy will try to get her to play.. women tend not to play so there goes that statistic.

I suspected that people like Talon (in the interview) existed, but didn't really believe it. I just find it amazing how weird people can get over a computer game. Isn't it supposed to be fun? I don't quite understand how someone can derive fun from the tension of a militaristic guild... I know that when I log in, I make my fame by chatting and being helpful. Instead of being a part of the best guild, I'd rather be the best player to turn to in need.

Oh well. Different strokes for different folks.

That's what the interview reads like, a set of rules about how to make a super elite club of ppl to defeat whatever enemy appears. It works, just it is restrictive in that the only goal is to win, other aspects of MMORPGs are not part of the Guild's gesellschaft.

Nice, Zonk...that's almost 2 comments an hour...and that's including my two comments telling you what an idiot you are.

Is Slashdot overloaded? Is this a clever ploy to reduce load on the servers? Or are you just a tool?
