Half-Life 2 Aftermath Retail Details

Eurogamer.com is reporting on details of the upcoming Half-Life 2: Aftermath expansion pack. At the moment Valve is still finalizing their publishing partner, and they expect to announce who that will be in early summer. From the article: "He also added that the current release date estimate for Aftermath is 'September'. Those with long memories will recall Valve signed up with Activision back in Spring 2003 for future content, but so far the only release has been Day Of Defeat. It is not known whether the US publisher will be adding to its expanding roster of FPS developers, with id and Infinity Ward among others already signed up. We shouldn't have long to wait to find out."

Apparently you don't understand the little amount of work they have to do...shouldn't be more than adding the new levels since the engine is already built. Off of the top of my head...I would say NLT August 2008

Steam still has DOD:S as "Comming Soon" section, but I don't have Half-Life 2 in any form.

Perhaps they're refering to a retail version of the HL1 mod, like they did for Counter-Strike?

Yes there have, but they are mainly print-only. There were some scans of some pages of DoD:S in PC Gamer in the UK about a month ago, which showed them doing a CS:S to DoD:S (abbreviation heaven!), aka totally redoing everything.

Every time I hear about these "source" releases, I keep reading it as source *code* releases.

Then I realize that we're talking about the source *engine*. D'oh.

NS is working on a Source port but theyre doing it in their spare time. They are working on a somwhat final version of classic NS (3.1) and also starting work on their original retail title which is currently unnanounced.

The last mention of NS:S was on April 11th:
We have also begun to research the efforts and challenges involved in a port of Natural Selection to VALVe's Source engine (Half-life II). So far our results have been mixed but with some positive surprises in terms of the artwork. We hope to begin asset creation relatively soon. There will however be no decisions on the code and the initial scope of the Source port until after v3.1 is released.

Well, given that everyone has to figure out how all the new modding stuff works, practice with it, learn how to make the higher-quality content expected for Source, actually produce said content, test it, program stuff, design, alter, monkey around and generally do a full-time job in whatever free time they have available, I don't think things are going too badly... ;-)
