Final Phrack Released ... Until the Next One
An anonymous reader writes "The final issue of Phrack has been released. From the introduction: 'For 20 years PHRACK magazine has been the most technical, most original, the most Hacker magazine in the world. The last five of those years have been under the guidance of the current editorial team. Over that time, many new techniques, new bugs and new attacks have been published in PHRACK. We enojoyed every single moment working on the magazine.'" Despite earlier reports to the contrary, though, "this is NOT to be the end of Phrack." All straight?
...articles with the word "enjoied" spelled properly.
Any ideas who is going to pick up the torch and carry on? I have little to input or i'd try to get involved.

It will be missed. But in these times I'm sure publishing something such as this is viewed with suspicion. So much for freedom os speach.
Who will guard the guards?
With the Patriot Act and the powers that be more than willing to name anyone a terrorist, I am truthfully too scared half the time to even think of testing out anything anymore. I used to be more than happy trying new things with computers and security, however now they'll probably charge you as a terrorist if you dumpster drive in the wrong place.

Anyway, who the hell cares about hacking anymore? Why dun you script kiddies out there go get some life, instead of figuring how to hack a system. The real smart people are those who solve problems, not create them. (Anyway, I once was a fool though)
Some believe Phrack has been 'dead' long before this issue. When a security enthusiast finds a new exploit, will he want to wait 3 months for Phrack to publish it in their next issue? Maybe, but by then the information may already be outdated. Phrack was great, and it will be enjoyable to read future releases, but it's not what it was and can never achieve that status again.
time is a perception of a being's consciousness
time is your 6th sense, the wierd ones are 7+

God DAMN it, the tree hugging fear mongers are everywhere on slashdot today. The Patriot Act sucks, granted, but jebus, blame it for everything from global warming to your pop tarts being stale...
Here is a hint: Most that shit was illegal before the Patriot Act.
You are being MICROattacked, from various angles, in a SOFT manner.
www.phrack.org still have 62 issues.
you are actually scared? give me a break.
you are just an overreactive pussy.
run dont walk to the docter and maybe he can find soemthing that resembles what is left of your balls.
the oh no i might be a terrorist bullshit ended 2 years ago. time to move on
I know I know, it's actually been released now...hooray. As similarly mentioned previously here and here . Sorry, ordinarily I wouldn't care, but I've just re-read the same news from so many sources about this magazine closing. Enough already.
Disgruntledly yours,

As much as 10% of any population aren't.
I hope the Celine Dion producers are reading this. This is exactly how the Celine Dion tour should be continued - with a new Celine Dion!

Maybe a tad queer.
What makes you think free speach issues have ANYTHING AT ALL to do with it? Looks to me more like they are taking a powder for a spell: Expect a new release, under a new regime, sometime in 2006/2007. Don't see much in the way of blather over "free speach" issues at their web site...

How's today any different from the communist/german/(insert super power here) scare of last century? or withcraft-hunting/inquisitions of centuries ago? or Roman/Mongol/Turks invasions of recent history?
Face it buddy, the threat of oppression from exclusive groups today is no different from any other day in human history. It's the few that stand up against them, standing up against all odds, that end up changing history... changing it ever slowly for the better.
Progress was never made by conformist cowards, never.
What does that mean? Are there any cases of this happening? Or are you making things up for the purpose of whipping up some hysteria? Is there any part of your post based on verifiable facts?
But if you really want to "try out new things with computers and security", it's not that hard to set up a network at home, other people tend to not like random people snooping around their networks, anyway. If you need a Cisco router to try out some new crack, maybe you shouldn't be doing it anyway? On the other hand, you can buy a router on ebay, and knock yourself out... What's stopping you?

I have a hard time understanding this, which article is right? Would /. possibly retract one?
Apparently, I've evolved and become the ueberhacker if this is any indication. (Of course it isn't, but hell.)
I agree with you, as a conservative it disgusts me that so called "republicans" could have passed such a law. I finally agree with the liberals on something. I would vote for Russ Feingold for President if the Democrat Party nominates him.
I am truthfully too scared half the time to even think of testing out anything anymore.
/. :)
Then the terrorists have won. LOL! You can't win you know... especially not on
Seven puppies were harmed during the making of this post.

Ah! Easy! They didn't have any computers back then and couldn't be l33t hax0rz!!!!!!!!!!!
(might have got the spelling wrong!)
So the "innovation" is the big wheels and finding some granny-stairs? This neither qualifies as "news for nerds" nor "stuff that matters".
http://www.phrack.org/show.php?p=63&a=5 Apple has been notifed, apparently and is fixing.
Over that time, many new techniques, new bugs... We enojoyed every single moment working on the magazine
they were kind enough to leave us with one last bug.
Enojoyed is not a correction to enjoied.
/. editors? Suggestion, try the Firefox Google Toolbar, it comes with a spell checker.
You mean "Enjoyed". Getting a little too much caffeine there

ahh, phrack. reminds me of the time when computer geeks were anti-government and anti-corperate. now a days it seems like anyone who is interested in comptuers only wants some high paying corperate job.
the open source software movement sucks, long live free software!
I never could get too deep into security. Whenever I see articles about hacking and exploits, I read them (as is the case here). Everytime, though, I end up wishing I understood more than just the surface.
Maybe what I really need are some rollerblades and a cool handle...

During the spring quarter 2004 I took the Advanced Network Security class
at Northwestern University.
[ Must been challenging. Did they give you a Offical Master Operator
Intense Security Expert X4-Certificate and tell you that you did
really well? Bahahahahahahah. ]
And I worked on a security project that has gained the interest of the
CBS 2 Chicago investigative unit.
[ Oh shit! the CBS is after you. Oh Shit. OH SHIT! I heard they
got certified 2 years before you! THEY ARE BETTER. I'M TELLING YOU!
RUUUUUUUN! ]
By pure accident I compromised a large City of Chicago institution over the
2003-2004 Christmas break.
[ These accidents happen all the time. Ask my lawyer. ]
During my research for this project I have compromised other large
Chicagoland institutions.
[ Rule 1: If you hack dont tell it to anyone. It's risky. Especially
in the country where you are living. ]
For now, I would just like to know if anyone out there has penetrated the
following networks and obtained any confidential data or left back doors to
the following networks. Chicago Public Schools, City of Chicago, Chicago
Police or Cook County.
[ Rule 2: Dont ever tell anyone what you hacked. ]
Christopher B. Jurczyk

[ Rule 3: DONT FUCKING POST YOUR EMAIL TO LOOPBACK!!!! ]
Do not say a word. They are listening even as we speak.

Seriously guys... not *EVERY* article on slashdot HAS to be about terrorists... Let bush and co play their game, just ignore em, works much better than this ;P
ok unfair, i don't live in the u.s, but still... doesn't help to be an anti-bush guy if your just as fanatic as the bush guys :)
Phrack magazine has become a venue for corporate hacker wannabes to make 'discoveries' and become famous, thereby landing them a cushy corporate job in the security industry, where they will sell fear and doubt to their idiot clients.
It does not represent the underground anymore!
Every technique in the latest issue has been known and used by real hackers for years now.
Move along nothing to see here
Ah, it would be a shame if Phrack went away. But, then again, there will always be people extending the tradition of poor writing in plain text format.
Oh, and greetz to spYrYt, vOoOdOoO, and Mom. (Thanks for the use of the basement!)
The South Will Rise Again!! pfft!
I look forward to seeing that quote in a Bill Griffith cartoon:
"YOW! The USA PATRIOT act made my POP-TARTS stale!"
Hmmm, maybe I should go check on my breakfast foods...
Show me on the doll where his noodly appendage touched you.
The difference is the ability to make an impact.
The new threates today have less of an ability to make an impact unless you are talking about the governments and then i would say they have as much impact as you would let them. Changes can be made on the second easier then the first but fear is nothing to be taken from either.
now they'll probably charge you as a terrorist if you dumpster drive in the wrong place.
I think that extra 'r' might be what's causing the problems.
Bah!
You just have to be more cautious and learn a bit more before you attempt anything. There_is_always a way around it.
This SIG pulled due to lack of funding. (This damn war is costing too much!)
Which means you've already let the terrorists win. In fact, you probably are a terrorist, I'm calling the Department of Homeland Security. I have to think of the children after all...
Real geeks are to caught up with taking technology further to worry about the petty fights of mortals. There is no law other than what you can make happen and what you can't make happen. Let the rest of society, the stupid people, worry about the consequences and legalities. :)
At what price learning? At what cost wisdom? The price is a man's peace of mind, and the cost is his life.
wan't the final Phrack last month?
My new blog
Once again Slashdot shows us the power of Blogs that have no credibility! Check your facts first.
for whoever that want to buy one, keep watching ebay!!!
Does this mean that Eric BloodAxe is gonna take over again?
My humor is probably your flamebait
Whitedust should be banned from posting to Slashdot all they are doing is using it as a launch to promote their web site.
As they mention over in the comments of the "article" they get put up on slashdot as they have good content.
Sadly this is not true they are confusing having good content with linking to good content. All we have seen is whitedust spamming slashdot with articles that have little merit other than linking to the site with the real content.
