Final Phrack Released ... Until the Next One
An anonymous reader writes "The final issue of Phrack has been released. From the introduction: 'For 20 years PHRACK magazine has been the most technical, most original, the most Hacker magazine in the world. The last five of those years have been under the guidance of the current editorial team. Over that time, many new techniques, new bugs and new attacks have been published in PHRACK. We enojoyed every single moment working on the magazine.'" Despite earlier reports to the contrary, though, "this is NOT to be the end of Phrack." All straight?
...articles with the word "enjoied" spelled properly.
Any ideas who is going to pick up the torch and carry on? I have little to input or i'd try to get involved.

With the Patriot Act and the powers that be more than willing to name anyone a terrorist, I am truthfully too scared half the time to even think of testing out anything anymore. I used to be more than happy trying new things with computers and security, however now they'll probably charge you as a terrorist if you dumpster drive in the wrong place.

Anyway, who the hell cares about hacking anymore? Why dun you script kiddies out there go get some life, instead of figuring how to hack a system. The real smart people are those who solve problems, not create them. (Anyway, I once was a fool though)
Some believe Phrack has been 'dead' long before this issue. When a security enthusiast finds a new exploit, will he want to wait 3 months for Phrack to publish it in their next issue? Maybe, but by then the information may already be outdated. Phrack was great, and it will be enjoyable to read future releases, but it's not what it was and can never achieve that status again.

I know I know, it's actually been released now...hooray. As similarly mentioned previously here and here . Sorry, ordinarily I wouldn't care, but I've just re-read the same news from so many sources about this magazine closing. Enough already.

How's today any different from the communist/german/(insert super power here) scare of last century? or withcraft-hunting/inquisitions of centuries ago? or Roman/Mongol/Turks invasions of recent history?
Face it buddy, the threat of oppression from exclusive groups today is no different from any other day in human history. It's the few that stand up against them, standing up against all odds, that end up changing history... changing it ever slowly for the better.

But if you really want to "try out new things with computers and security", it's not that hard to set up a network at home, other people tend to not like random people snooping around their networks, anyway. If you need a Cisco router to try out some new crack, maybe you shouldn't be doing it anyway? On the other hand, you can buy a router on ebay, and knock yourself out... What's stopping you?

ahh, phrack. reminds me of the time when computer geeks were anti-government and anti-corperate. now a days it seems like anyone who is interested in comptuers only wants some high paying corperate job.

I never could get too deep into security. Whenever I see articles about hacking and exploits, I read them (as is the case here). Everytime, though, I end up wishing I understood more than just the surface.
Maybe what I really need are some rollerblades and a cool handle...

Phrack magazine has become a venue for corporate hacker wannabes to make 'discoveries' and become famous, thereby landing them a cushy corporate job in the security industry, where they will sell fear and doubt to their idiot clients.
It does not represent the underground anymore!
Every technique in the latest issue has been known and used by real hackers for years now.

The new threates today have less of an ability to make an impact unless you are talking about the governments and then i would say they have as much impact as you would let them. Changes can be made on the second easier then the first but fear is nothing to be taken from either.

As they mention over in the comments of the "article" they get put up on slashdot as they have good content.
Sadly this is not true they are confusing having good content with linking to good content. All we have seen is whitedust spamming slashdot with articles that have little merit other than linking to the site with the real content.
