New Graphics Chip Relies on Reduced Gate Count

absolut.evil writes "HardOCP has an interesting story about a small integrated graphics chip maker from Norway: Falanx. The hardware is scalable and has a much lower power consumption thanks to its reduced gate count. So in theory we could see geforce/radeon style graphics in a set-top box -- maybe even a cell phone. They say they'll have hardware by mid-2006."

    OK, sounds nice. But how much you want to bet that the phones will still cost the same? At least considering how much providers rip us of as is.

    Besides, most of those extra chips that this new one gets rid of are stupid crap like cameras etc.

    Lower Power Consumption==Lesser Number of Gates.

    Scalable==More Gates can be Added.

    More Gates==Higher Power Consumption.

    More Gates==Closer to the Nvidia/Radeon style Graphics.

      not necessarily.

      i reviewed the article and from what i gather they claim scalability through the addition of more chips not more gates - creating a 'cell' environment or something relatively similar. so while in theory the cell itself would contain additional gates, the chips that make up the cell would not.

    If we can actually get cheap phones with decent battery life, and moderate (or even great) graphics, maybe we'll get more competition. Probably we won't, but it's worth a shot.

    Also, what prevents me from setting up my own personal cell service on a business campus? I'm not familiar with FCC regulations on this topic.
