World Cyber Games Come To A Close

GamePolitics reports on the results from the World Cyber Games, held in Singapore this year. The U.S. didn't come out badly in the medal count, with the Ryans taking the gold in Halo 2. From the article: "At the closing ceremony, Dr. Lee Boon Yang, Singapore's Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts said, 'Digital games as part of the whole entertainment and media ecosystem is big business and a growing contributor to the global creative economy. We are therefore proud to be the host country of such events as they serve to reinforce Singapore's position as a regional hub and gateway to Asia.'"

I couldn't make sense of the linked results page -- try this one.

So, the Americans won the Halo and CS titles, the Koreans won Starcraft, the Brazilians won Need For Speed, the Germans won FIFA Soccer, the Japanese won DOA ... seems about right.

Can anyone explain how the NFSU:2 tournament works?

Do both people use the same stock cars or do they build up thier own car (whichever one they choose)? Why not gt4 (I love nfsu but...gt4 is a better racing simulator if you are just going 2 player mode).

So how did the Frozen Bubble game go? I didn't see it in the results.
Or tetris for that matter, or Quake3...

All of these run on a lot more platforms than *ahem* Halo 2.

Hang on this is the World Cyber Games isn't it. What do you mean it's just some contest for a couple of games on Microsoft-only platforms?

Most games run on Microsoft platforms. Sorry, it may not be fair, but it is the way of the world right now. Until Mac OS and Linux become ligitimate GAMING platforms, then the World Cyber Games will remain a Windows PC based event.

I don't understand why people compete in console games, but as for the PC side.. Its whereever the competition is. I assure you if you could get a few thousand people interested in competitive Tux Racer then some tourneys would spring up. Its all about sponsors/eyeballs.
