Heavyweight Franchises Measured

Next Generation has a look at which of the gaming franchises are the weightiest by measuring game sales for current and next-gen systems. From the article: "A new graphic shows the top-sellers across all current major platforms, with Mario, Madden and GTA leading the pack. The list - based on NPD North America data - shows Mario at number one followed by Madden and then GTA. Star Wars is the top entertainment licence at number four followed by Tony Hawk."

  1. Mario barely beats out Pokemon for GBA by WillAffleckUW · · Score: 1

    Even though Mario wins cross-platform, it's interesting that Pokemon gives him a run for his money when we go into the Gamecube/Gameboy sphere.

    My guess would be it's all the people playing Mario GoKart on the xBox and PS2 that push Mario over the winner's line.

      I would have thought GTA would be #1, but the lack of GTA on Nintendo platforms seems to be enough to keep Mario in 1st.

      True, and even if they do come out with GTA: Eido or some Japanese version, or even GTA: Emerald City (since Seattle is hot in Japan), I doubt we'll be seeing a Gamecube or GBA version, so maybe that is why Mario has the lead.

      On the other hand, we're looking at raw numbers, so it is slightly surprising to find out that Mario titles are the most popular.

      GTA 2 was on Gameboy Colour and GTA Advance on the Gameboy Advance. Both were pretty shit, sadly.

      Adding PC game sales would probably have put GTA into first too.

      Huh? Are we reading the same chart?

      I see three bars under "Mario" for the GC, GBA and DS. There are no "cross-platform" Mario titles.

      To tell the truth, Mario probably reigns supreme because they're counting everything with the word "Mario" in it as part of the franchise. So Mario Golf and Super Mario Sunshine fall under the same category. That's why the Mario franchise can sell the most games without even targeting the other platforms, it's just plain BIGGER.

  2. I predict Sims will catch up soon by WillAffleckUW · · Score: 1

    They only just released Sims 2 on the xBox (have it), PS2, and Gamecube, and there are also new Sims2 releases for GBA, PSP, etc.

    Took me a while to even find the Game cheats books for them.

    My guess would be that a lot of people who bought Sims and Sims: The Urbz will be picking those up this year, so I wouldn't expect them to stay in the bottom tier of the pack.

    Now, if we were talking PC, then the Sims 2: Nightlife, Sims 2: University, and Sims 2: Open For Business sidelines would probably push the whole category way over the top, but none of those exist for the consoles to date.

    I love how they spell out some of the entries but not others...

    GTA = Grand Theft Auto, that's pretty obvious.
    NFS = Need For Speed, I think.
    LOTR = Lord of the Rings, pretty obvious
    WWE = World Wrestling Entertainment, they're known by their acronym, OK

    Then, as we move down in popularity, we get:

    MOH = Medal of Honor?
    FF = Final Fantasy?
    GT = Gran Turismo?

    I think the full titles would have fit, and would have avoided confusion.

    It's down-right depressing to see that Zelda is that far down the list, though. Apparently Zelda is less popular than Yu-gi-oh and, for the ultimate disgrace, the Namco Musuem collections. Ouch.

    Oh, and on the subject of confusing acronyms, we have the console list.

    XBX = XBox
    PSP = ... well, PSP.
    PS2 = PS2 again. Don't worry, they'll start being harder soon.
    NGA = ? I can't see it in the chart at all, so it's obviously not that big a platform, but Google was no help. Oh. "N-Gage", right.
    NDS = Nintendo Dual Screen, I'd assume.
    GCN = GameCube (Nintendo)
    GBA = Game Boy Advance
    360 = XBox 360

    Seriously, the amount of extra space required to spell out "N-Gage" would have been worth it. I think.

      Zelda as a franchise is still a heavy hitter, but It hasn't had nearly as many big releases for current consoles as Mario (Mario Sunshine, Mario Party, Mario Tennis, Mario Strikers, Mario and Luigi, ad nauseum) Grand Theft Auto (GTAIII, Vice City, San Andreas), Madden (2000-2006) etc.

      Other than 4 swords (which was just a blip on the radar, really) we've only had the wind waker this generation, since Twilight princess keeps getting pushed back.

      The chart is based on sales of all games in the franchise, apparently. Nintendo doesn't use the Zelda franchise nearly as often as they do Mario and Pokemon. Also, the chart doesn't include any consoles older than the PS2, so most of the games in the Zelda franchise aren't even taken into account. Of course, if they had included the older games, the chart would have been skewed heavily by older franchises. I think the chart would be more interesting if it weren't just raw sales numbers added together, but an analysis of the relative values of the franchises based on average sales per title.
