LugRadio Live 2006 This Weekend

mrBen writes "This weekend (22nd & 23rd July) sees the 2nd LugRadio Live event, bringing together a huge number of top quality speakers (including Mark Shuttleworth (Canonical), Simon Phipps (Sun), Stephen Lamb (Microsoft), Ted Haegar (Novell)), exhibitors (including Ubuntu, OpenSolaris, MythTV, Joomla, Bytemark) and a slew of lightning talks and BOF (Birds of a Feather) sessions. Last year's event gathered 250 geeks from all over the world to Wolverhampton — this year's event is twice as long and twice as big, and promises to be the community event of the year."

    My scientific calculator user group had 10 people meet at last years event! This year I plan on TWICE as many people attending. It should be the event of the season! There will be talks on the more unused features of the calculator, as well life-affirming mantras to fend off thoughts of suicide. Of course, this isn't as big as LUGradio, but it's not like Slashdot is posting AA meeting times or yardsale locations... THIS IS IMPORTANT TO EVERYONE!!!

      This isn't a user group meeting, this is both well-known and not-so well-known Linux and Free/Open Source Software people giving talks to gathered audiences, along with a community of podcast listeners getting together to enjoy a weekend of chat, beer and events. Is there really a need to be sarcastic?

      Nice way to miss the point. LugRadio has a huge listenership worldwide, and their event is one of the few that hasn't been taken over by the men in suits. More to the point, they've attracted some of the biggest names in the community, and some really interesting projects.

      If Linux isn't your thing, then feel free not to come.....

    For those of you interested in Linux, google your city Linux. They are a lot like the computer (A2,C64/Atari) clubs from the 70's/80's. You meet good poeple and you will learn something new. Knowledge == Power.

      Note that this is LugRadio Live - it's an annual conference organised by the LugRadio podcast (http://www.lugradio.org), although a good number of LUG members from around the world will be attending (eg theres a good contingent going from Scotlug).

      Mind you - you will meet good people and learn something new :) And there will probably be a large quantity of beer consumed.

      YMMV - The local LUG here is worthless, a bunch of Micro$oft bashers that get together and BS for a Saturday afternoon. Zero motivation to have installfests, projects to promote Open Source/Linux, or even have organized meetings. They do have fun flaming people on their mailing list though. :(

      It is quite a disappointment compared to the LUG I moved away from. Installfests twice a year, active in the community, active & on topic mailing list, well designed web site full of information, social events after the meetings and the 'Tux luncheon' - more than I can think to list at the moment. As a noob Luser to *nix, they were warm & welcoming while also being so eager to assist. I learned quite a bit from these folks, and when they asked I stepped up and help run many events and meetings for them - another opportunity for me to learn.

      I usually suggest to new *nix users to find their local LUG, due to the superb experience I had - but I now preface my suggestion with a caution that not all LUGs are the same, or if they really act as a LUG.

      Yeah - hopefully as I'm filming nearly half the talks and dont want my time to go to waste! Susan's doing a great job in organising the AV stuff - so it should go well this year for video stuff

    Clan LugRadio (http://clan.lugradio.org/) are providing LAN gaming and I have 4-player Gauntlet on my xmame (http://x.mame.net/) cabinet. Hope to see many old and new friends there. BTW: LugRadio Live 2006 deserves to be front page news!

    I'm looking forward to the special blend of geeky chat with some friends I've met online, learning new stuff from the developers of the products I use every day, beer, a few games of Enemy Territory, listening in on a recording of LUGRadio and generally having a bit of a laugh with some friends. I created a natty PDF which shows what's on in an easily digestable form. Almost time to print out and highlight!

    I went to the last LinuxWorld Expo in London. I didn't go to LRL2005, but I'm off this time. From what I'm told it's a lot less corporate, and much more fun. I hope so!
