AMD planning new types of chips after buying ATI

The completion of the AMD acquisition of ATI has the potential of turning AMD into a larger and more potent force in the world of personal computing. "In the near term, customers gain a new level of choice, and in the long term, we believe the possibilities for innovation are truly limitless," CEO Hector Ruiz said in a statement. The two companies' combined strengths could help create the key components for new computers that will run Microsoft Corp.'s forthcoming Windows Vista operating system, which will be available to consumers in late January. "By driving innovation and integration in processing, especially in graphics, the new AMD has the potential to empower breakthrough computing experiences for users of Windows Vista," said Jim Allchin, co-president of Microsoft's platforms and services division."
