Slashdot 10-Year Anniversary Party Updates

Reminder to check for parties in your area. You can still create new parties through the weekend, but you'll need to RSVP ASAP in order to make your location eligible to get a care package of ThinkGeek gift certificates, and Slashdot T-Shirts. Remember to read the discussions on your party to be notified of location changes or updates. Party planners- make sure your email address is up to date- we'll need to get a shipping address for shirts. We've upped the number of shirts to 700 to accommodate a quite impressive number of parties and attendees. The corporate drones demand that I share with you official rules to be eligible for the $1000 gift certificate. The winner will be selected by me, based on who sends in the picture/video/story from their party that proves theirs was best/coolest/whatever. Some folks have already contacted me with some creative ideas so the competition is gonna be tough. Choreography? Synchronized Swimming? Group Chanting? Streaking? Lastly, A special note to Ann Arbor party attendees (Oct 20!)- we've moved the location to Leopold Bros. It's only a block away, but they can handle a larger group. I'll be in attendance trading T-Shirts for booze ;) The Palo Alto party is looking large as well. Looking forward to attending both.

The idea is that, as people who frequently read and interact with Slashdot and the myriad and diverse topics it covers, we'll have a huge domain of common interests to talk about. I'm sure most of us work with or spend a good amount of time on hobbies that relate to Slashdot, so there's a ton of interesting conversation right there that you probably couldn't have with the typical person you don't know. Someone suggested printing out a list of people's comments and discussing them. There's no formal agenda (yet, at least) but if you have any ideas, please, let us know. We could extend the party into earlier in the day doing something else if there's enough interest.

I hope it'll be more than sitting around making Soviet Russia, Naked and Petrified, and Profit!!! jokes.

Of course there's going to be a certain amount of that, but there is in reading Slashdot, too. I doubt anyone reads Slashdot just for the joke memes. It's mostly for discussing niche nerdy interests with other people who care about them. I'd imagine it would be the same at a party, if people actually talk...

I really hate being around alcohol and people I don't know...

Alcohol can make people stupid(er), but it's also a great social lubricant. I don't know any of the people who will be showing up either, but I imagine we'll have some interesting conversations we probably wouldn't have had otherwise. Many of us probably don't get the opportunity to talk about these things in a group setting frequently, so at the very least it will be an interesting experience that doesn't happen often.

In short, I don't know what to expect, but it should be fun.

Hey, no worries. I'm sure this will be a virgin-friendly event ;-)

Seriously, I've found that the best solution in these situations is to have a couple of beers, and introduce yourself to some new friends. If you don't want to drink, I'm sure there'll be plenty of others who aren't obnoxiously drunk and/or obnoxious when drunk ... at least for the first couple of hours.

By definition, trolls are deceptive. Thousands would sign up for a gathering that none will attend.

Honestly, who would show up? To be tricked by a troll is a mark of humiliation within that subculture and anyone involved would necessarily have an interest in that subculture. Trolls aren't the type to openly invite humiliation.

I wouldn't expect any such gathering to be much larger than existing close-knit groups.
