Village Re-elects Dead Mayor

Gheorghe Dobrescu has to be the most unpopular man in Romania. He recently lost a mayoral race to a dead opponent. A supporter of the dead guy said, "I know he died, but I don't want change." Election authorities gave the post to Dobrescu in the end but some villagers have called for a new election. The dead mayor said that he was willing to forego his usual salary in lieu of fresh brains.

A U.S. Senate candidate was elected in Missouri despite the fact that he died while campaigning. While many attribute it to the effect of the "pity vote", others attribute it to a majority wanting anyone but the "other guy".

I, for one, am glad that such an option exists - otherwise we could get stuck with a "last man standing" who is exactly what we don't want.

In Romania you have to drive a stake through your mayor's heart before you can be confident he's really dead.
