LittleBigPlanet Goes Gold, Trophies Leaked
Upcoming world creation game LittleBigPlanet has gone gold, and will be officially released on Oct. 21st in the US. The game will come out exclusively for the PS3, in part due to the fact that it fills up a Blu-ray disc. The list of trophies was leaked alongside the announcement. Groups of students at Parsons will be using a 24-hour period this weekend to create levels for the game. Gamespy has a collection of videos and previews for LittleBigPlanet. To protect users' creations, it will feature an in-game copyright system.
I was hoping this would be another game in the Little Big Adventure series, but no luck. They should try picking a name that doesn't collide with a classic adventure series.
Give me Classic Slashdot or give me death!
This game sounds absolutely perfect for the Wii. You've got an editor, which the Wii excels at with Wiimote pointing, and a platformer, which the Wii excels at with the Wiimote held sideways. This game is obviously catering to the Wii crowd.
And yet they're releasing it on the PS3?! WTF?!!
Yeah, sure, "it uses all the space on the Blu-ray" but if you check the story you'll discover that it's all HD video and not, like, game assets. Reduce it to SD and it'd easily fit on a DVD and therefore be perfect for the Wii. In fact, Alex Evans even says that "the game itself and the levels you produce are relatively compact."
But the main purpose of the game is content creation, right? So obviously you'd want a console with great online community support, which the Wii doesn't quite have. So that aspect is perfect for the Xbox 360 then!
But no, they went with the PS3. It has the wrong controls. It has the wrong online support. And I'm not about to burn $560 for one game.
Too bad, this would have made a great Wii game. They could have used Miis for the characters rather than the creepy looking things they have now.
I've been a pretty hardline PS3 basher since before the system was even released, but I still found myself looking forward to this game. Great gameplay concept, being able to design your own levels is good for replay value, and the game itself looks absolutely beautiful. The only downside is that it's on PS3, which I swore up and down I would never buy just for one game.
Fast forward to this past March, and I'm in need of a TV and some entertainment equipment for my new place. I snag an HDTV and reluctantly get a PS3 since the format war was finally done with. I still have maybe 3 games for the thing, but it excels as a BR player and a network media center, so I'm quite happy (albiet, surprisingly so) with my purchase. The main point of all this? Now that LBP is FINALLY about to be released, I can eagerly await the release date even more since I'll actually be able to have my own copy to play. This seems to be one of the titles that, if they had released it at launch, would have sold systems like crazy. Hopefully it lives up to my lofty expectations.
Now if only the people working on White Knight Chronicles would finish the damned game already, I would be even happier.
"So after all this, you make my case for me. To end this stalemate, you must die..."
Because clearly the PS3 "community" has enough quality people capable of using 4 letter words.
I was a PS3 owner before you and I don't recall giving you authority to decide who is and isn't welcome in our community, little bitch.
SJW: Someone who has run out of real oppression, and has to fake it.
You guys must be absolutely thrilled with Coffeetime Crosswords. Game over, the 360 clearly won the console wars sealing the deal with that exclusive.
Of all the words available to you in all the languages of the world, the best you can come up with is "Gaystation"? Seriously?
I mean, I guess it makes sense. It kind of reminds me of my large black dildo. It's big, it's intimidating, and of course, it's black. The thing is built like a tank, no matter the beating it still comes back for more. Sure, it gets hot after extended usage, but it's always up to the challenge. What can I say, the thing is fucking fun.
What, you'll be too busy coming up with brilliant masterpieces like this?
Strange definition of flop you have.. either that or you haven't noticed that the PS3 has been doing fine for years now, so technically it has passed the flop-or-not stage. BluRay is well established anyway, so even if no more games were available, I'd keep my PS3 as a HD media player. You need a reality check.
If I seriously cared about Xbox 'exclusives' (hint: I don't) I'd just buy an Xbox as well as my Wii and PS3. To be fair, if I didn't think Microsoft was managed by assholes, and there wasn't the RROD fiasco, and Xbox played HD movies, and actually had any interesting 'exclusives' that wouldn't be out on PC in a few months anyway, then yeah, maybe I would have considered the Xbox instead of a PS3.
which is totally what she said
Who can say what's a flop anymore after last gen where the Xbox was somehow considered successful (something like 24 million sales, 4 billion dollars lost) while the Gamecube was seen as a failure (21 million sold, profitable).
Justice is the sheep getting arrested while an impartial judge declares the vote void.
The Xbox is perceived to be a smashing success by it fans because the louder and more frequently you say it, the truthier it sounds. (And if those little shits on Xbox Live know anything, it's how to do "loud".)

The Xbox 360 has sold about twice as many units as the PS3. The Wii has sold more than twice as many. Sony is losing money on every PS3 sold, thanks to the cost of the hardware, and it's still one of the more expensive Blu-ray players on the market; if all you care about is Blu-ray, you can get a perfectly good player for half the price of a PS3.
How badly does it have to do before you consider it a flop?
The Xbox 360 has sold about twice as many units as the PS3.
FAIL. They're currently sitting at ~20m 360/~15m PS3. lrn2 math and google

As opposed to Microsoft, who's posting a loss because the 360 is an under-engineered piece of garbage. You're absolutely right, the PS3 is DOOMED because it wasn't gimped right out of the gate.
Have you seen the HD screenshots for the game? It looks fantastic! I'd certainly prefer to play this game in HD, which the Wii cannot do.
Do you know what the game is about? It's basically a platformer with a real-time physics engine, and tools to create objects in the world. It's calculating physical interactions between all in-game objects, and there are a good selection of materials to work with. The PS3 processor is perfect for this type of workload. There's also custom textures (aka stickers) that you can apply everywhere. That takes up precious RAM. For resources, the PS3 soundly beats the Wii. You just can't make the same game on another console.
They're trying to make LBP a community driven game. The PSN is perfect for this because it's free. People don't have to pay to participate, other than the initial game cost of course. You seriously think the Xbox360 is more perfect than this?!
The PS3 controls are pretty decent. They're certainly better than holding the Wiimote sideways. Online support is great.
You can buy a brand new PS3 for $400, if you're in America. Less if you buy it used. I think they may even make a LBP bundle.
You don't have to buy a PS3 just for one game. There's many other PS3 exclusives which are great, both on Bluray and PSN. I'm currently playing Uncharted, and I'm having a ball with it. It's the first time in a long time, that I've stayed up playing a game until 5am, not realising what the time was.
LBP seems to be the kind of game that is no fuss, simple to play, and doesn't need an investment of large amounts of continuous time. That seems to match my definition for casual gaming.
You could probably pick it up and start playing from any level. Also, all level can likely be finished in less than 20 mins. The level creation aspect could suck up the time, I have no doubt. Otherwise, she looks to be pure casual goodness.
There are no other PS3 exclusives being released for the rest the year, meaning that this game is the ONLY game that will be pushing PS3s come the holiday season.
I knew that had to be BS, so I looked up what I could on IGN. These aren't necessarily the only exclusives, but just the ones I can be sure of since they are published by Sony:
Wipeout HD (Sept. 25)
NBA '09(Oct. 7)
SOCOM: Confrontation(Oct. 14)
Motorstorm: Pacific Rift (Oct. 28)
Singstar V2(Oct. 28)
Resistance 2 (Nov. 4)
White Knight Chronicles is coming Dec. 25th, but is Japan only for now.
There were a few other pieces of shovelware (but exclusive shovelware!) in there too that I didn't bother.
and, Little Big Planet.

For me to consider it a flop it would have to be selling as badly as the PSP. Selling the hardware at a loss is perfectly reasonable when they are expecting to make their money on the games (MS do this too).
For months after the PS3 came out it was actually cheaper than most dedicated Blu-ray players as well. I do care about more than just blu-rays but it's a nice bonus. Most blu-ray players won't have media centre capabilities (something I paid almost £200 for with my Squeezebox), internet browsing and excellent gaming abilities too.
I don't know anything about the market stats, but at first of course the Xbox will have sold more than the PS3 because it was out for a year or so in advance. The PS3 had a slow launch but these days it seems to be selling as much as the Xbox for any news articles I've seen (on The Register, though I don't check it that often and I don't actually care that much who is 'winning' as long as there are still decent games being released for the PS3).

The PSP is outselling the PS3 by about 2:1. Really!
So the PS3 is actually selling substantially worse than the PSP, which meets your definition of flop.
Well, I don't consider them to be in the same market - put it this way, the DS is outselling the PSP 2:1 as well, and it's probably only doing that well because of recent facelifts and such? It has always done pretty badly against its main competitor, and I've seen people complaining about a lack of games etc. I also tried my cousin's one and thought the controls sucked (though my first gen DS also tended to give me cramp, and the power button was right above the d-pad resulting in me switching it off by mistake a few times :s ).
But compared to its main rival the Xbox, the PS3 is doing okay despite the Xbox having a massive amount of time to get its foot in and dominate the market, so I don't consider it to be selling 'badly' in the same way as the PSP is selling badly compared to its main rival. Anyway, as you or someone else pointed out, the machines themselves are a loss leader, it's games (and blu-ray movie) sales that are important to Sony. I know I've bought something like 10 games (that's not including downloadable content and games) and more than 10 blu-rays (including a couple of series) since buying my PS3 at the start of the year, so I think they're doing okay out of me.
