Colossus of Rhodes To Be Rebuilt As Giant Light Sculpture

The people of Rhodes will once again be able to gaze upon one of the world's seven ancient wonders with the help of East German artist Gert Hof, and international funding. Like the original, the new Colossus will adorn an outer pier in the harbor area of Rhodes, and be visible to passing ships. Unlike the original Colossus, this one will be made of light. "We are talking about a highly, highly innovative light sculpture, one that will stand between 60 and 100 meters tall so that people can physically enter it," said Dr Dimitris Koutoulas, who is heading the project in Greece. "Although we are still at the drawing board stage, Gert Hof's plan is to make it the world's largest light installation, a structure that has never before been seen in any place of the world."

    The energy demands for this thing must be huge. I wonder how they are offsetting the carbon.

      I hear they plan on saturation-bombing Southern California with pine cones so saplings will grow from the ashes of former celebrity homes.

      offsetting the carbon? THIS IS GREECE, MAN! We don't offset the carbon, and also, we burn a couple of our forests every summer just for good measure! (sadly, I'm serious)

      You can't offset it, if you do anything about it that thing could had been done anyway so ..

      Who cares, it's not like it will make a huge difference compared to all other light sources, also how much energy would be consumed to build the same thing in concrete or whatever? + lighting that one up, maintenance, so on.

      The extra commerce they get for each square that already produces one will undoubtedly be used to research Ecology, which will allow them to build a Solar Plant. No need to worry about pollution.

      Forgive me. Too topical, regional, and perhaps tasteless for /.

      Southern California is on fire right now, literally. It has been for a a few days now, actually. Celebrity homes are being destroyed and evacuated (but not necessarily in that order).

      Also, the heat from forest fires are what burst some types of pine cones open to release the seeds within onto the ground.

      Also, trees take carbon dioxi.....oh, I'm sure you don't need me to explain that part of the joke to you.

      Sadly, I know you're serious. I was in Greece two summers ago when the fires there were making international headlines. I drove by a few mountainsides that were completely black and in some cases even still smoldering from recent fires. IIRC, a developer intentionally set at least one of the fires, which ended up getting massively out of control, in an attempt to bypass some laws that prevented development of forested land. At least the authorities got the bastard. I wonder how he feels now, knowing that his greed ended up getting people killed.

      Eat Germany ? Nope, not just at the moment, I just had a good lunch - please excuse me. As for the eighteen year bit ... did you visit Germany this last little while ? I get to visit several times a year. Believe me, there is seperation of the body - like with a wall down the middle, and you're right the wall has been down for a moment. But there is also seperation of the mind-set ... comes from two differant methods of education. This seperation is still alive and kicking in both East and West Germany and we need to be careful with it

    What a great way to spend 200 million euros, a statue without physical presence. Why not spend another 200 million on a companion piece in Alexandria of a lighthouse with no luminous parts?

      There are some people in Middle-East working with a project that has cost only 3000 times as much as this proposed statue.
