    Is that a very strange piece of physical artwork, or a Photoshop job?

    I can't imagine it's a real, functioning machine. And there isn't a story link either.

    From my experiences being around some digging equipment will working for a phone company, this thing is more a figment of someones imagination that real life.
    1) I don't see any handles, joysticks, etc for controlling any legs, diggers.
    2) If they were going to use a bucket for a leg, they would need some sort of pad or other anti-skid device for digging on pavement - this thing as shown would slide all over on the back of steel buckets.
    3) And why add a tire? It looks as if it is only trying to hold it. There is no visible mount.

    Cooling, but not real life in my world...

    after looking at the picture for a while i think someone got creative with the photoshop. the shadows are a bit wierd and it seemes out of place. im no expert but thats from an untrained idiot
