Data Privacy Day Wrap-Up
Several companies, government bodies and other groups have decided to label January 28th as an annual tech holiday of sorts, Data Privacy Day. Mortimer.CA writes "Various organizations had events on it including Intel, Microsoft, Google, and the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. It seems to have been mostly a quiet affair this time around, but hopefully it will grow over time."
Apparently it's so private that nobody knew about it.
why is this sort of stuff always a daily affair? security awareness month (october), privacy day (january 28), hug your system administrator (okay, i made that up). i suspect a largely orthodox negroid hand involved in formulating this stupid idea.
It's too bad nobody heard about this until now. I hope this was just a sincere, but underfunded effort. More needs to be done. They could just reschedule it for a day in May and no one would be the wiser.
It was announced in the budget yesterday. The Canadian government intends to switch to Ninnle Linux on desktops and NinnleBSD on servers for all government IT services. They have conducted studies that indicate Ninnle Labs is the best way of safeguarding the privacy of Canadians. The wholesale switchover will start at the new fiscal year in April.
ruined
I'm going to keep my computers powered off all day. Awww, damnit.
512 MB RAM, 20 GB disk, 200 GB transfer, five datacenters. $19.95/month.
but hopefully it will grow over time
Hopefully not. How the hell else do you think that news and video is going to get paid for without targeted advertising? (Music obviously will always be able to fall back on live performances, which is good since it would be pretty annoying to listen to ads for music.) Traditional online advertising is both annoying and inefficient – there's a reason why people actually sort of enjoy reading ads in when they're targeted to them (think: magazines).
What a coincidence that it came the day before the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services held a teleconference call in which they described to our national private health care insurance providers how they were now required to collect and send SSNs and medical data of all patients over age 45, including ones clearly not eligible for Medicare, and the subscribers refused, suggested that they simply drop their private health care coverage, in violation of USC 42 1395b.
Grab the GHP Conference Call Transcripts from http://www.cms.hhs.gov/MandatoryInsRep/ before they pull 'em. Choice quotes are on Oct 22nd call, page 38 on.
Isn't it like critical mass--irreversible loss of parameters? Seems not to be much lauded because of that, really...
...who took part in it at my place of work.
I put on an eyepatch and bandana, stuck a stuffed parrot on my shoulder and hopped around saying "Aaaaarrrrr" a lot. I hope more people will join in next year, cos I felt a bit conspicuous.
Squirrel!
