Airline Worker Flies NY To Boston In Baggage Hold

A JetBlue employee was discovered by baggage handlers at Boston's Logan International Airport after falling asleep in a plane's cargo bin while in New York. He said he'd been accidentally locked inside the pressurized luggage compartment while taking a nap and called JetBlue officials when he realized he was in the air. The man wasn't charged with any crime and was returned to New York when it was determined he wasn't dangerous. The impromptu flight has led some JetBlue officials to consider a new ultra-cheap "roll around with the luggage" travel option for more adventurous passengers.

Hell, I'd do it if they were serious. Especially if I planned on sleeping during the flight anyways.

You might get more sleep there, anyway.

Getting up for the facilities is going to be a problem.

He is actually very lucky to be alive. While the cargo hold is pressurized, it is not heated. It is almost like being in Mount Everest cold. Thank the lord is was a short flight.

If a cargo hold is pressurized, it's done with bleed air just like the cabin. Bleed air from the engines is very hot (200 degrees Celsius) and has to be cooled down before entering the cabin. For simplicity, the exact same system pressurizes the cargo hold and thus where you have pressurization you also have heating.

Actually most airliner cargo holds are heated. Otherwise they wouldn't be able to carry animals back there.

Its the wheel bays which are not heated or pressurised. Makes sense when you think about it. Its easy enough to pressurise a cylinder. Much harder structurally to pressurise half a cylinder.
