Motorist Pushes Suicidal Man Off Bridge

Perhaps inspired by Van Halen, retired soldier Lian Jiansheng, 66, broke through a police cordon and pushed would-be jumper Chen Fuchao, off a bridge. Chinese media reports that traffic had been held up for five hours while police tried to talk the suicidal Chen away from the edge. After being pushed, Chen fell 8 meters onto a partially inflated emergency air cushion and was taken to the hospital with wrist and back injuries. Lian was held by police and had this to say, "I pushed him off because jumpers like Chen are very selfish. Their action violates a lot of public interests. They do not really dare to kill themselves. Instead, they just want to raise the relevant government authorities' attention to their appeals."

    Rather poor reporting, if you ask me. 8 metres is about 8.75 yards... closer to 9 than 8. But who measures distance in yards, anyway? 26 feet would have been a much better figure.

    Also, why is the display so messed up on Slashdot today? This story rendered in a long 14-pixel-wide column of text, and clearing the cache and reloading didn't fix it. I'd also like to know where the "Raw and uncut" viewing level went, but that's a different bone to pick.

      Feet? Who measures in feet? I guess everybody with the most basic education knows how much 8 m is anyway. If not, he probably can't read so why even translate it for the illiterates?

      The correct answer happens to be, "The vast majority of the users here on Slashdot".

      Read the FAQ, it clearly says the vast majority of Slashdot users are from the USA.

    I'm glad he pushed the guy. That's the approach that should be taken with every police stand off with a suicidal person.
    Instead of wasting hours of the police's time and tax payer money, just pull the trigger for him.

    It would appear that an average Chinese-on-the-street, would put to shame an average storm-trooper or chekist, at least as far as cold-blooded murderous loyalty to the state is concerned.

      I think it would be excellent to have this as general policy. A) The world is getting overpopulated. B) People that top themselves or threaten to, especially in public settings, are about as selfish as you'll find anywhere.

      They should have removed the cushoins and brought in a bob cat, garbage truck and street sweeper. What's loyalty to the state got to do with anything? The guy was a whiney toss pot.

      The suicidal are often among the more capable in society, apart from their moment(s) of weakness. The only people who are always happy, are the parasitizing-mentally retarded who are generally well-supported by another member or collective of society. Any system of eugenics should start with consideration of IQ (since it is in general the so-far-strongest hereditary attribute correlated with success and flexibility), and be effected through sterilization. Any other suggestion is just aesthetics or mean-spiritedness.

      Agewisely speaking, you're about 20 years off.

      I have lived with depression, I know others who have. People who throw themselves off public bridges into traffic - or even threaten to - are not simply depressed, they are selfish, inconsiderate and rude. I have said similar things to someone who was threatening to top themselves and it's amazing how when you point that out to a self obsessed fuckwit in clear terms, they suddenly look a bit embarrassed and calm down.

      BTW, for the record I think the same thing about people who point guns at police to be shot dead rather than top themselves in private, and people who jump in front of trains are disgusting. It is so incredibly inconsiderate and rude.

      If you must do it, realise that you are being a total fuckwit to anyone who cares about you and do it in such a way as to cause the minimum inconvenience. Otherwise, I see no problem with it being a well oiled shovel 'em up and bury them in the dump job. Don't apologise for them - spread the word that people who do this shit are scum.

      People with terminal illnesses who chose to go at there own time excluded, of course.

      Fair enough. I agree that public displays of suicide are pretty disgusting (although does this mean that society should be more supportive, in helping people to do it privately?), and that "suicide by cop" is pretty much the epitome of this kind of wrong-doing, apart from actions which actually threaten other people's lives (e.g. driving into traffic). Train jumpers are pretty lousy too.

    Fuck, I've turned into a Linux fan-boy. I read the headline as, "Microsoft Pushes Suicidal Man Off Bridge"
