Diploma Denied To Student Who Blew Kiss To Family
suraj.sun writes "A Maine high school senior was denied his diploma at graduation after he took a bow when his name was called, pointed to friends and blew a kiss to his family. Justin Denney was graduating from Bonny Eagle High School June 12 and had gotten up on stage to receive his diploma when he gestured to his friends and relatives. School Superintendent Suzanne Lukas abruptly told Denney to return to his seat, according to WMTW TV in Maine. He didn't get his diploma. His mother, Mary Denney, is livid. Her son told her that the superintendent warned, 'There's no fooling around up here'. 'He just kind of looked at her because he wasn't fooling around. He didn't consider that fooling around or misbehaving in any sense of the word,' Mary Denney told WMTW. Lukas reportedly asked the soon-to-be graduate why he thought he deserved a diploma. "He goes, 'Because I worked hard and I earned it,' and she goes, 'No, go take your seat,'" his mother told the station. Other students also walked away empty-handed because of various disruptions during the ceremony. Some started playing with beach balls and others were separated from their friends, according to WMTW. Mary Denney doesn't believe her son violated any code of conduct."
I don't even know what to say to that one. I'd like to ask this school if they *really* think this student was wrong in the belief that he deserved his diploma for "working hard and earning it"!? If so, well - maybe that's a sign that it needs to be shut down for failing to graduate their students based on sensible methods!
The kids are graduating. You should be happy. Let them toss a beach ball around and take a bow.

God how I'd love to see some of these moronic school administrators try to get a real job where they literally had to accomplish something measurable like the rest of us. I mean, c'mon, the kid has just spent 13 years of his life in an endeavor that he had no choice in participating in. Just mail them all their damn diplomas and let them have whatever the hell kind of celebration they want... it's like the school has to give them that one last dose of treating them like children -- and BIG SURPRISE, the kids treat the graduation like the patronizing event THAT IT IS. By the time a kid reaches graduation age, it's time to start treating them like adults. Adults have options in how the events of their lives unfold, and we don't try to control them. They are given choices, and they live with the consequences of those choices. Let the kids decide if they want to participate in the graduation ceremony or not. If not, give them their diploma, wish them luck, and leave them the hell alone you pathetic pedantic pedagogues.

We don't need no thought control.
No dark sarcasm in the classroom.
Teachers leave those kids alone.
Hey, Teacher leave those kids alone!
All in all you're just another brick in the wall.
All in all you're just another brick in the wall."
You graduated from state-sponsored teenage daycare.
I assume that the school made its policy very clear well before the ceremony started, and reiterated it immediately just before it did.
To entirely deny a pupil a school certificate for a momentary lapse in judgement is extreme. Presumably the school simply plans to post the certificate to its former pupil's address without further ceremony.
