Ubuntu Christian Edition 5.0 Beta

JimLynch writes "Back in 2006, when I was writing for ExtremeTech, I reviewed a version of Ubuntu with a religious theme: Ubuntu Christian Edition. At one point it seemed as though Ubuntu CE had been discontinued but I was pleased to note today that it has apparently been brought to life again and so I decided to do a full review Ubuntu CE 5.0 for DLR."

Personally, I find the world around me far too intricate and beautiful to write it off as just some chance happening. I find it much more probable to be the result of some intelligent design. By all means, you believe what you want.

On the other hand, if you think in terms of the laws of society, just because you have no proof that you'll get caught doesn't mean you should go around breaking the law. By extension, just because there is no law against something doesn't mean you should disregard ethical considerations.

In the end, religion is primarily a guideline for how we should treat others. In that regard, one is (for the most part) just as good as the next.

One of the reasons I use Linux is that it is a secular operating system.

It's not an operating system, it's a kernel. To make a "complete" OS, you also have to add a shit-ton of GNU libraries and utilities, a desktop environment, and a "suitable" collection of apps. Maybe the reason you use slackware is because it's a secular OS, whereas (for example) Debian is dedicated to the religion of Free Software, but the kernel is nearly identical.

I have bad experiences with religion and I have a problem with religious organizations tainting Linux and the secular philosophy of openness and transparency.

Tainting Linux how? Look at the list of components again, and try to think about which ones they'd be "tainting". Obviously, it'll be the application selection; wtf do you think they're going to change in the kernel to "Christianize" it?

Second, why do you "have a problem" with any group making their own derivative version, "tainted" with whatever they please? Freedom for only those you agree with is not freedom. If you don't like it, don't use it; if they should get their (supposed) changes pushed upstream into the mainline kernel, then you do have legitimate cause for concern, but you can just start your own fork, reverting those changes. (Alternatively, since getting a religiously-motivated patch into mainline would be a miracle, you might consider becoming a true believer.)

Religion is pro-censorship, pro-dogma, and the antithesis of everything that the Linux movement stands for in my opinion.

Hope you distance yourself from the "Linux movement", then, considering that you seem to be in favor of censoring this religious variant because it violates your secularist dogma.

Oh, and "Linux movement"? This is classic Ubuntu-noob fail: there's no "Linux movement"; there's the Free Software movement, the Open Source movement, and the Ubuntu movement. The latter is singularly prone to conflating "Ubuntu" with "Linux", considering themselves the center of the universe, having no understanding of how freedom in software development that got them where they are, and (consequently) repeatedly campaigning to remove that freedom, typically by demanding that we "standardize" on a single app for some purpose, but occasionally in more ludicrous fashion, with comments such as this suggesting an entire distribution should be eliminated simply because they don't like it.

As a result, the Ubuntu movement is frequently an object of mirth and derision by people from both the Free Software and Open Source movements, to which they respond (completely unaware of the irony of their own position) with idiotic laments about how everyone started as a noob, and experienced users need to help them instead of being assholes for the fun of it. Which, naturally, provoke new rounds of mirth and derision.... Thanks for playing, though; I needed a chuckle.
