Baby Dictators

Artist Nina Maria Kleivan knows that there is nothing more adorable than a baby dictator. That's why she decided to dress her 1-year-old daughter Faustina as some of the world's most infamous despots. The list of precious little monsters includes: Joseph Stalin, Benito Mussolini, Saddam Hussein, Ayatollah Khomeini, Chairman Mao, Idi Amin, Augusto Pinochet, and Slobodan Milosevic. Faustina is so cute as Idi Amin that she is in danger of eating her own cheeks up.

Just imagine what it’s going to be like for her growing up, when one of her classmates finds these photos and spreads them around the school...

Why didn't I think of that? That's guaranteed way to have some real leverage over your child's behavior when they get to be a teenager! "Be home be 10:00, or I start posting the Hitler pictures on your Facebook page!"

How was the exhibition shown in Germany? In Germany, it is illegal to publicly display a swastika.

That's an urban legend. It's legal to display swastikas for educational, satirical, and so on purposes.

The urban legend is that a censorship law with exceptions "for educational, satirical and so on purposes" actually gives you any safety except when you're precisely toeing the Party line. Your education is their propaganda, and vice versa.

Mao? Why Chairman Mao? He was a wonderful man! Sure, he killed millions of people through executions and failed social policies, but if you want a communist paradise you have to make a few sacrifices. He's good enough to appear on Obama's Christmas tree! And his communications director and science czar are big Mao fans! How bad could he have been?
