LRO Photographs Soviet Lunar Landers From the '70s

braindrainbahrain writes "Photographs of the Sea of Crises on the Moon taken by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter show the Soviet lunar landers Luna 20, Luna 23 and Luna 24, which landed on the Moon in the 1970s. In addition to the landers, it is possible to see the tracks made by the Lunokhod lunar rover! The Soviet Lunokhod lunar rover predates the first successful Mars Rover by some 30 years. (Note: Very cool old-style artists' drawings of the Soviet craft at the Wikipedia links above.)"

    Admittedly, I didn't read TFA, just the summary, but aren't these the same pictures that were used recently to rediscover and locate the rover that Lord British (Richard Garriot) bought at auction, or are they new, clearer pictures?

      If you actually had read the summary, you might have noticed that this is set includes a few extra landers. The other article had only the one lander (although IMO it was a better picture because you could see the tracks clearly). I wouldn't call it a dupe. Give it a few more days then we can call it a dupe.

      The original story you mention is about the Luna 21 lander.

      This news story is about the Luna 20, 23 and 24 landers and has slightly zoomed in pictures compared to the Luna 21 pic.

    We all know that the Apollo program was a hoax. It was all filmed in the Nevada Desert... But who let the Russians come to Nevada in the 70's? Now I really am scared... I thought they were our enemies then.. but apparently they were in on the hoax....

      Apparently Japanese are included in hoax too as seen here. We all know that USA had better cameras 40 years ago than Japan today, so hoax it is. I'm sorry but I don't know about Russians at Nevada at that time, or at least I won't tell you. Have a nice weekend.

      Of course it was a hoax. How come they can find all the Russian craft, and yet there is no picture of the WAVING FLAG and the FOOTSTEPS YET?!???!!!!?!!?!11! Ah, I see, the wind from the ET's attack ship removed them from the surface. (Yes, I am 120% serious.)

    Does anyone else look at these with the same awe as the pyramids. Like "Look what those primitive people could do with only boatloads of cash". It makes me sad the state of our local space exploration.

      We're doing just fine at exploring space. What we're sucking at is providing male enhancement pills and porn for those who don't recognize the difference between exploration and stunts.

      I suspect you aren't paying much attention to space exploration. Does having two working rovers on Mars for the past several years, a mission to Titan, a probe soon orbit Mercury, more probes sent to Jupiter, multiple orbiters currently circling Mars, multiple different space telescopes, a probe currently en-route to Pluto, and a slew of other missions listed here "make you sad"?

      If it does, I suspect you don't understand what space exploration is about.

    The Soviet government directly killed tens of millions of people, destabilized the world economy resulting in billions more losing years of potential life expectancy, and threw away its stolen resources on untimely mis-prioritized space projects which were to ultimately lead to a military hegemony and irrevocable slavery for all mankind!

    Luna24 is certainly similar in style.... Finland is close to Russia so it might explain where that art CD came from!! ;-)
