Spain Holds First National Siesta Championship

Hundreds of contestants are competing in Madrid to be crowned the nation's best sleeper. The first national siesta championship is being held in a shopping center, with first prize being $1,400 in shopping credit. Sleepers get points for any unusual positions they sleep in, unusual pajamas, and extra points for snoring. From the article: "'The modern life is a danger that we feel is against the siesta. When you sleep la siesta everyone has the image that your life is calm, you have a good life. And then, the modern life is a direct attack,' said Daniel Blanco, president of the National Association of Friends of the Siesta."

I was trying to get a first post, but I was taking a siesta. Maybe everyone else is too. :) Mine don't last very long. They're usually interrupted with the bosses saying "Wake up you lazy fuck, and get back to work."

Nuts, this is an article on taking a nap. That's it.

Is there any analysis of the health benifits of naps? Mental performance changes? Longevity changes? Nah, just some bored people trying to win a napping contest.

The only reason it's here is because someone thought it was funny. Slashdot is the wrong blog for "hey, I thought this was funny".

Proof: At the moment there are 4 comments. 1 is spam. The other 3 comments are light banter between 2 people. Nobody cared enough about this post to make a serious posting.

Yes, I know I can filter out Idle. I shouldn't have to.

Actually there is a science angle. There's been a number of studies that show that people perform better after a nap.

Also, it means you don't have to keep the aircon running through the hottest part of the day.

    Naps are f*cking awesome.

Naps are awesome because they're that time when you get to be asleep, as compared to the rest of the time when you are running around fixing things for other people who aren't as tech-savvy.

I wish we all could have naps every day. Especially on those days when we're up 'till 3 in the morning fixing some server in a room that sounds like a jet engine is taking off about 3U away from your head.

Sure, maybe it's a contest, but it's about naps. Remember: Sleep is holy!

I work as a machinist and have taken to wearing earplugs while in the shop. I find I'm much less tired at the end of the day. They're fairly comfortable and I can still hear people talk.

Is this done in server rooms?

It is sad that the sieasta is going away. They should market that much more and force the rest of the world to accept the siesta for themseles instead of loosing it. Power to the sleepers!
