An anonymous reader writes "A guy who goes by the online handle DDRBoxman decided it would be fun to blow up his Samsung Galaxy Nexus display onto the wall by connecting his phone to a projector. He then connected the whole thing to a PC and, thanks to Microsoft's open-source Kinect platform for Windows, he was able to create a custom ROM that mapped out the phone interface to the Kinect sensors. Pretty neat!"

It's official: iOS now has more marketshare than Android. Reuters reports that Apple completely erased Android's marketshare lead, confirming earlier reports by both Nielsen and NPD. Over 150 Android smartphones couldn't outcompete the iPhone 4S.

  Relevance to the current topic? Absolutely none as this isn't a story on sales of anything. Secondly I do see one huge flaw in the articles view of marketshare. If you are going purely by sales that is also not a good comparison. Android users are far less likely to repeatedly upgrade their phone when it works for everything they need. 1 person 1 sale unless it breaks. Apple fans on the other hand are more likely to buy every model that comes out. So 1 person, 4 sales still only 1 phone actually being used, 3 rotting in a drawer somewhere.

Clearly, if the iPlatform sells more devices that makes it the "winner" of life and all of the "losers" can pack it up, right? I will take my fragmented, constantly charging iphone knock off with pleasure if it means I can avoid thinking like you, EVEN IF the last software update ever made for it is '2.7.3'.

  Pure sales are how you define marketshare, there isn't any other way to do it. Android phones are the ones that require a new purchase every six months because they don't get OS updates. It's the business model of the carriers to sell a new phone every year. As a result, Android users are far more likely to repeatedly upgrade their phone. Android phones that are only months old can't even run Ice Cream Sandwich, while the 2.5 year old iPhone 3GS can run the latest version of iOS.

  Wrong. While the Android update situation is dismal, most Android users don't have to upgrade because their phone is already doing what they want it to. iPhone users typically have the extra money laying around to upgrade a phone without a contract extension. After all, you can't maintain your status with last year's model.

  "Can't run" and "No update available" are two different things. OG Droids are capable of running ICS just fine. The problem lies with carriers / manufacturers sucking at releasing updates.

  and a capability to run apps that aren't approved by apple (caveat is that a developer can create an app that is installable on 100 devices without going through the app store...for $99 a year, or for a greater cost with an enterprise license - unlimited devices - I suppose that means buying approval for $99 or more)

  I know I am feeding the trolls but what Schmidt said had nothing to do with marketshare at all, his remark was this: "there are literally so many manufacturers who are working so hard to distribute Android phones globally, that whether you like ICS or not, and again I like it a great deal, you will want to develop for that platform"... Gee, someone wanting to make a platform that people want to develop apps for... How dare he!

  The links GP provides don't really support GP's proposition (certainly I was surprised at his claims since they differed from the other reports I'd seen). For one thing, this talks ONLY about Q4 sales, not market share per GP's claim. Of course sales is a leader of market share, and if you can be dominant in sales, market share follows eventually. However, owning one quarter's worth of dominance can't exactly be called a pattern, particularly when there's a demonstrated strong pattern of customers holding out for the new product launch that happened for iOS in this quarter.
  Apple certainly had a good quarter, and made up some of the gap between themselves and Android, but still 51% of Q4 new smartphone sales belonged to Android (compared to 37% for iOS). This is according to GP's own link. Another of GP's links has iOS at 43% of the new sales compared to Android's 47% of new sales, but still Android is outselling iOS by that report; just not by as wide of a margin. The only report to actually support GP's claim of the three provided by GP has a difference in sales of 0.1% - far, far less than any margin of error could have been, so at best it could be claimed by this report that it can't be shown that iOS is still losing market share to Android; no claim that one or the other is dominant could be made from such a narrow margin.
  It still has jack squat to do with an interesting hardware/software hack between a phone, a projector, and a Kinect. A little more responsive, and something like this would make a fantastic presentation platform.

  anecdote *IS* data. it may not be statistically valid and/or high quality. Or it may be.
  between my wife and i, we have 6 iPhones in a drawer along with 4 iPods. my iPad will likely join them within the year. I also have a dev nexus one in that drawer, along with a few nokia's and moto's (razrs).
  my current phone is Nexus S running droid 4. hers is an iPhone 4
  tech gets old and there are new things you want to do.

  I've been using the same 3G model for nearly four years and since the plural of anecdote is apparently now data I can confidently say that the average iPhone user has bought 3.4 The .4 must come from the digitiser I replaced.

  Not that I think the original post has any merit (Android vs iOS marketshare is hardly a major issue when they move 1 or 2% each way due to noise in the data), but your assertion seems to be that now that the marketshare data says that *Apple* is ahead, that it's due to "frequent upgrades" and "old iPhones sitting in drawers".
  Yet, when things like the "Buy One Get One Free" deal on Android handsets from Verizon are mentioned as reasons that Android's numbers were up during that particular quarter are not valid criticisms and just "butthurt fanbois" looking for excuses? (remember, it was trumpeted as Android's triumph over the iPhone since Android was selling at twice the rate of the iPhone 3GS in that quarter since everyone knew the iPhone 4 was coming out).
  For what it's worth, I've had two iPhones - my old one went to a new home when I repaired a 3GS and started using that as my primary phone. My sister sold her 3GS when she got a 4S, and my brother... well, he dropped his in the sea, but such is life.
  Unless you've got some actual data to back up your claim that iPhone sales are down to frequent upgrade and "disposal" of old phones (now that they're selling faster than Android, and clearly this can only be due to some major flaw of people who buy the phones, else it might be perceived as a "weakness" in Android for some reason) then it's entirely speculative.
  From my perspective (ie, anecdotal), all the people I know with iPhones skipped generations when upgrading, if at all (and not due to contract issues - we're not in the US), although I'm not going to suggest that's the norm.
  So, with my own anecdotal data:
  Me: 1 phone, 1 sale. (then one broken phone repaired and used. Old iPhone 3G given to family member, so now 2 phones in use)
  Sister: 2 phones, 2 sales (iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4S. The 3GS was sold to her flatmate for a bottle of vodka)
  Brother: 1 phone, 1 sale. (iPhone 3GS. dropped into sea. Phone stopped working. started using a Nokia 3210 since he could not afford to buy another smartphone)
  Aunt: 1 phone, 1 sale: (has been using a 3GS since shortly after it came out. No need to upgrade. Has been offered upgrade twice (4 and 4S) and declined twice)
  Dad: 1 phone, 1 sale (has been using iPhone 3G since it came out. Spends approximately £400 per month on calls [very frequent international travel as an engineer] has been offered upgrades to 3GS, 4 and 4S, declined all of them. Smashed screen of original 3G in a factory. Repaired with new screen himself).
  My flatmate: 2 phones, 2 sales (iPhone 3G, iPhone 4S. Gave her 3G to her brother).
  I don't know, I mean my data is purely anecdotal, but I don't actually know anyone who has gone 3G > 3GS > 4 > 4S over the lifetime of the iPhone. Similarly, of those who have upgraded, their old phones stayed in use by new users. There muse be some people who do that, but I'm betting based on my extended family and friends that most people don't do it that way, or that their old phones "rot in a drawer" after upgrade.

  Actually, Eric Schmidt was referring to the question on why on Android, apps are ported to it from iOS rather than Android apps going the other way (though there have been a few - Dolphin HD, for example).
  Basically, he means ICS will take over the world and developers would code for it because it has greater marketshare rahter than iOS.
  Of course, it's CEO talk so a bit exaggerated, since well, it took a year for a release of Android to become the majority (Froyo was released in 2009, and became the majority in 2010. Gingerbread was released in 2010 and became the majority (55%) in 2011. ICS was released in 2011, and will become majority by late 2012 (at which point a new release of Android would be out). Ignoring Honeycomb as even ICS beats it right now.
  The other point is well, money. Having marketshare means nothing if people don't buy, and alas, it seems people on iOS buy, while Android users seem to go for free or pirate. Or, as one avid Android user I know does, he builds it himself - because Android is open source so he insists that all apps he uses on Android must be open source.
  I will say this though - ICS fixes a LOT of Android problems.

  You are reading those reports all wrong. You're infected with confirmational biast. Those are reports for a single quarters worth of sales. During that quarter, there were more new iOS phones being sold than new android phones being sold. The install base for android dwarfs iOS. Don't fool yourself.

GreatBunzinni has been posting anonymous accusations listing a whole bunch of Slashdot accounts as being part of a marketing campaign for Microsoft, without any evidence. GreatBunzinni has accidentally outed himself as this anonymous poster. Half the accounts he attacks don't even post pro-Microsoft rhetoric. The one thing they appear to have in common is that they have been critical of Google in the past. GreatBunzinni has been using multiple accounts to post these "shill" accusations, such as Galestar, NicknameOne, and flurp.
That's not the problem. The problem is that moderators gave him +5 Informative and are now modding down the accused, even for legitimate posts. Metamoderation is supposed to address this by filtering out the bad moderators, but clearly it's not working.
This "shill" crap that has been flying around lately has to stop. It's restricting a variety of viewpoints from participating on the site and creating an echo chamber.

  He's right that at least 4 of those accounts are the same guy, though he missed NorthKorea somehow. This is the guy who rambled about travelling around Asia, fucking she-males and eventually catching some disease that had him bedridden for 6 months. He likes the word "frankly", and the phrase "you can't deny". He defends North Korea quite a lot. He has said on a couple of his accounts that he works in marketing. He claims that Visual Studio is the best thing ever. He likes to slander Google and praise MS. It's not hard to figure out if you're paying attention.
  I sometimes wonder if he's just an amazingly clever troll who is trying to get those who've mellowed slightly in their hate for MS (such a myself) to lose all respect for them again. If so, it's working.

This might be great for some type of whiteboard app.
If I need a whiteboard at work, I just plug in my phone to a projector and scribble w/e I want down. If I have a meeting later in the day I can just plug my phone into the projector in the conference room and can have my co workers instantly collaborate on my earlier notes. If I get home and feel like looking over or adding to my work notes, I can easily do so.
Of course the downfall to this whole idea is the fact that each location would need an available kinect and projector. I wonder how long until we can cram similar technologies into a phone though.

  If it performs anything like the video shows, I'll pass. Reminds me of working on my old G1 when I was near max capacity on the system partition (wasn't rooted; couldn't move apps to SD card; ran like SHIT).
  Don't get me wrong... I'm sure it was a fun tech demo. It's just awful in many respects.
  IMO, what would be far cooler would be to:
  * connect phone to projector (either a better one so it's usable with lights on and on a 120" screen, or a portable laser or LCD one)
  * turn the camera on the phone into an IR camera (remove the existing filter; add a few layers of exposed 35mm film)
  * use IR pens to treat it as a whiteboard (these already exist, btw)
  All the parts exist off the shelf. The camera would take a little tweaking. To market it, maybe sell an external IR camera add-on. You could have a portable digital whiteboard with any smartphone that has video out + a $200 lcd projector + ~$10 IR pen. At that point (ie. software done) it'd be trivial to sell it for laptops and netbooks as well.
