Samsung Employees Conspired To Sell AMOLED Tech; 11 Arrested
zacharye writes with this snippet from BGR: "Nearly a dozen suspects have been arrested and charged with crimes related to the theft and sale of AMOLED display technology under development at Samsung. Yonhap News Agency on Thursday reported that 11 suspects either currently or formerly employed by Samsung Mobile Display have been arrested. One 46-year-old researcher at Samsung is believed to have accepted a payment of nearly $170,000 from an unnamed 'local rival firm' in exchange for trade secrets pertaining to proprietary Samsung technology used in the company's AMOLED panels..."
Sure of it.
Their they're doing there hair.
guess samsung didn't pay their employee well.
It wasn't stolen! It's not theft! It's corporate espionage! Samsung still had the technology!
(Ironically, it might also be copyright infringement, depending on the circumstances, which is what this rant about using the proper terminology is usually levied against)
Any chance the first letter of the rival's name is L and the second letter is G? I didn't know they were that desperate for organic LED tech.
When you let bloggers masquerade as real journalists. For those like me who weren't aware, AMOLED:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMOLED#Comparison_to_other_technologies
AMOLED displays provide higher refresh rates than their passive-matrix OLED counterparts, improving response time often to under a millisecond, and they consume significantly less power. This advantage makes active-matrix OLEDs well suited for portable electronics, where power consumption is critical to battery life.
Too bad that they fail. Another AMOLED manufacturer is a must !
LG supplies screens to Apple, Samsung supplies processors, I wouldn't be surprised if it was LG that was responsible for this espionage.
I'm no fan of apple, but your barking up the wrong tree. Apple doesn't use AMOLED screens because AMOLED screens don't offer the high resolution that apple wants. Samsung does manufacture the apple 'retina' displays but they are not based on AMOLED technology. No need to call them in as the bad guy here.
"According to authorities, the man unsuccessfully attempted to sell the information to a Chinese display manufacturer at that time."
Call me biased or whatever, but I already knew the word Chinese was gonna be in there before I even read the story.
Consumers benefit the most if all of a sudden there are many competitors in this market even if the original development is stolen.
You can't handle the truth.
only pirates are so intent on changing the language
ahhhhh, the ironing is delicious. Thanks, AC!
the preceding comment is my own and in no way reflects the opinion of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
No Samsung supplies screens: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-03-13/samsung-supplies-apple-with-touch-screen-for-new-ipad.html
WTF Slashdot, why do I have to login 50 times to post?
Is that a way to justify theft?
Some people also benefit from armored money trucks spilling their cargo over a highway.
But it raises the cost of doing business, and ultimately society pays a price for that.
Hmmm... like the Nichicon electrolytic capacitor theft? Exploding capacitors for a decade. The consumer doesn't always win.
No, I am not talking about 'justifying theft' at all. The question was: "who benefits the most?"
My answer is: consumer benefits the most. I am giving an answer without talking about morality etc., whatever. No, it's not moral or just that this got stolen.
Yes, it is true that consumer will benefit the most.
The socialists here will say: bullshit, those who'll make money from this stolen tech will benefit the most, and if they are only talking about relative value that the company gets compared to any one or a small group of consumers, well, they have a point.
However from point of view of the market it's just more competition in the market and when you take into account millions of people who'll be able to buy cheaper AMOLED displays, whatever they are - TVs, phones, computer screens, etc., then you can understand that the real wealth that was created is not money, it's these very screens. It's supply of something that didn't exist before.
This will cause problems to the original developer company (Samsung) in that they will not be able to follow normal market pricing curve, it will be offset to the negative side by some amount, but they will still be in the black, just not as much. Of-course they will probably sue the other companies that will benefit from this theft.
However again: I am always against patents and copyrights, but I am for the trade secrets for reasons similar to this development - the competitors cannot lock anybody out of the market but they are welcome to develop their own competing technologies or they can try and steal, and at the end it is consumer who gains.
And really, given how socialist this place is, shouldn't you be on the side of the consumer at all times, especially when the other side is a big company? Why the double standard this time?
You can't handle the truth.
You assume that stolen tech will introduce more competition, which will drive the prices down and increase selection for consumers.
I will assume that stolen tech will result in lawsuits, possibly shutdown of the company that was "stealing" and all the resulting costs passed over to the consumer.
Have a nice day.
Actually, Apple doesn't use AMOLED because Samsung wouldn't supply them with enough screens for the iPhone, because they were tied up in Samsung's own smart phone offerings.
its not missing the point, its trying to deliberately stretch the point to make false connections in order to support the position.
It is true that when you remove all morality from the subject, the availability of a single product type from a large number of manufacturers does increase competition and thus drive prices down.
it is also true that stolen tech will ultimately result in stupidly high dollar lawsuits which ultimately are passed on to the consumer who then has to bear the weight of those costs.
inclusion of the term 'socialist' is not only incindiary, but serves only to purposefully steer the conversation in a desired direction and has nothing to do with the actual topics being covered. also, trying to push only one side of the conversation (in this case the pro-consumer aspects) while completely ignoring the anti-consumer realities that would result was done on purpose.
its actually a damn good trolling.... im going to give a 7/10 on that one.
Sadly not, don't forget that all those blown caps in the early 00s was due to corporate espionage, they stole only part of the formula and tried to "fill in the blank" and got it wrong, causing untold losses from prematurely blown boards.
Also what you are advocating is basically a form of "race to the bottom" which as we have seen really only gets you garbage. There is a reason why a PC I build for a customer lasts so long it gets passed down to several family members while that $300 Dell special gets shitcanned 3 weeks after the warranty is gone, and that is because of quality parts. I make sure i have the best parts, from solid caps to high quality fans, whereas the Dell uses the cheapest shit they can get their hands on.
If a company can't make any money from their tech because it'll be stolen they just won't invest in any R&D that costs any real money which gets you a race to the bottom where everyone is making the same shit, just using shittier and shittier parts. See all the cheap ass Android tablets for an example and i'm sure most would agree that the vast majority are absolute garbage, totally designed for the dump, and are just a complete waste.
ACs don't waste your time replying, your posts are never seen by me.
Consumers might benefit in the short term, but in the long term as investors refuse to risk their capital in high tech .. nobody will benefit. Also without an accumulation of capital (since nobody will be able to make a large profit margin due to competition), there won't be anyone with the capital to fund new research.
Come on, admit it. You're just making this up
Apple doesn't use AMOLED screens because AMOLED screens don't offer the high resolution that apple wants.
It used to be true, but I'm not so sure now. Galaxy Nexus has a 720p AMOLED screen - but that's PenTile. If you count subpixels rather than pixels, though, it's actually exactly the same pixel count as iPhone 4. Granted, physical resolution is still lower - iPhone screen is 3.5", Galaxy Nexus is 4.5". Still, that's about 250 DPI. Given that they are talking about some ongoing developments here, I wouldn't be surprised if Samsung is actually planning to roll out "retina" (300+ DPI) OLED displays soon.
Too bad that they fail. Another AMOLED manufacturer is a must !
Really? Your preferred way to get more of the stuff you want made is to encourage theft from the people who are risking giant piles of money to develop it in the first place? What are you, 8 years old?
Don't disappoint your bird dog. Go to the range.
Actually he is not ... Apple tried to the get AMOLEAD in the iPhone. And that's from someone working for Samsung in Korea.
Governments have already done that with first to patent laws. Seriously what did you think would be the outcome of laws like that.
Chaos - everything, everywhere, everywhen
Hey, listen A/C. If we want to dump on Apple without evidence or rational reason, we'll do it, ok?
If this happens often and the people stealing the technology aren't getting caught, that's a pretty cheap way to "research" new technologies
How do you tell which parts are built to last? Most reviews I see on Newegg, Anandtech, etc. focus on initial quality, performance, and price:performance, not durability.
I built a gaming PC in early 2007 with mid-range parts, like a motherboard with solid caps, and nothing has failed so far (using it now). But beyond that, I'd have no idea how to build a durable computer. What's your secret?
A superamoled screen doesn't have the retina's resolution, but it looks much, much better on non-text viewing. Pure contrast and saturation of colors vs. text and higher-res applications. It ends up being a tossup.
Is that a way to justify theft?
What theft? This was a violation of trade secrets laws. Not theft.
It doesn't take long to find out who makes the quality parts, especially if you eat your own dog food. For example do NOT buy ECS if you are ever wanting to upgrade the CPU, as only what is out at the time will be supported PERIOD. oh they'll update their lists but they won't update their BIOS/UEFI and without the update you'll find the chips won't run correctly. For fans ALWAYS use bearings, never sleeves as the sleeves wear out and get noisy as hell quickly, Also it doesn't hurt to have a couple of gamer customers that turn everything to 11, if a company's products survive them then they are pretty good.
For boards i use Asrock or Gigabyte, but you have to know that the secret of Asrock is that they usually have the defaults too OCed so drop them or at least know the specs of the parts you are using. RAM Kingston or Corsair, although I've found some of the better built (look for the heat spreader) RAM by Patriot is pretty good although it won't OC, I use AMD chips because I don't like the whole Intel OEM bribery bit although that will soon probably change as they don't have a product that can compete with Thuban (I've seen insane OCing with Thuban on air, whereas the BD line is just another P4 netburst mess) and for HDDs I preferred Samsung, especially their EcoDrives as those things would take INSANE amounts of abuse, we are talking construction trailers and warehouses, and keep going but now that its just SG and WD its really just a coin flip as they both have bad batches. Oh and for graphics I prefer ATI/AMD and usually go Sapphire or Gigabyte, both have great warranties and make great boards.
So there you go, a little luck, a LOT of dogfooding, and having some customers that can kill a Sherman tank with a toothbrush have helped me come up with what so far has been a pretty damned solid build.
ACs don't waste your time replying, your posts are never seen by me.
"in exchange for trade secrets"
While Samsung has been pretty good about not suing others for patent infringement (unless they are counter suing), isn't the point of patents supposed to be to encourage companies to publicly reveal their trade secrets? Yet these companies still benefit from trade secret laws that protect them? Shouldn't all of the information needed to copy this technology be publicly available for others to see publicly?
Where is the patent that tells me how to build my TI Graphing calculator, my cell phone, my monitor, my micro processor, my television, etc...? The companies that make these things, including Samsung, have many patents, yet none of those patents are any useful and their true useful technological information is kept secret. What's the point of patents again?
Wow! That's more info than I could ask for. I just checked and my 2007 pc has sleeve bearing fans - no wonder it is so loud now. I'm confused about your assessment of ASRock - you say they OC their motherboards by default? What does that mean, exactly?
Also, do you have a website or anything set up for your pc building business? I may want to refer friends/acquaintances to you if they want a pc built and I'm too busy/lazy to do it for them.

It's definitely a domain HILTON owns (TLD no less) that shows HILTON DOES INDEED UTILIZE Windows!
As does this from MS "get the facts" program + EWeek magazine:
HILTON HOTELS: Manages 1.4 Billion records a day for customers in 1000's of their hotels worldwide - for 370,000 rooms & catering services forecasts (switching from 6 *NIX systems to 1 Windows Server 2003 + SQLServer 2005 clustered failover system using a data warehouse with 7 million rows & 99.998% uptime).
* I'll be waiting... this is going to be amusing I think!
