MAKE's 2nd International Maker Meetup: Raspberry Pi

The second International Maker Meetup is taking place tonight from 6-8pm PST. The focus this year will be Raspberry Pi. There will be tips, demos, and a live Google+ hangout. You can join the fun in real-time by RSVPing here.

    I guess it's that time of the week for moronic /. editors to pay homage to one of the most overrated hunks of electronics, the Raspberry Pi.

      This is about MAKE, not the Raspberry Pi. If anything, you should be happy that people are going to meet up and discuss useful applications for the Pi. It has great potential and it's sparking a resurgence in the micro PC market.       Stuff looks promising indeed, it's just sad that so many people refuse to even consider the possibilities.

      It is indeed sad. Fortunately, it's mostly only the slash dot crowd that is
      having trouble thinking outside the box. The popularity of the Pi is
      bringing millions of folks to the world of Linux for the first time and
      introducing them to an enterprise class OS that they have never experienced.
      The popularity of Unix was due to the fact that most universitys had Unix
      because it was free and all the CompSci students got to take that knowledge
      out into the world when they left. This will happen again with Linux on the
      Pi and might even result in a real "year of the Linux desktop".

      yes ok outside of the box, what can I do with a computer that is the same power as the one I had in 2002

      its not that big of a deal, its just small, learn some hardware and demystify your box

      Oh please like slashdot has the tendency to report about MAKE events... I like MAKE but in the stream of weakly non RPI news , I have a very hard time not classifying this as another RPI advertisment.

      Liz, is that you ? You know what my problem is with the rpi?

      - an pseudo open platform (look at the drivers).
      - the hostile attitude against other platforms while they wanted to spark a revolution (think about the children bla) and welcomed cheap alternative platforms. When you mention them on their boards it is totally not done and you have mods even want to delete those messages because it is unfair against the rpi. And I'm not talking about "rpi sucks" threads but "hey guys did you see this product ? Is it any good because the rpi doesn't suffice for my project."
      - what really aggrevates me is that in the same sentences they insinuate that others surf on the rpi and the sale of other devices is bad for other projects. With regarding of ARM stuff it is existed whay before the RPI and while i could aknowledge that the popularity of the RPI helped to spark interest in these things, it doesn't mean that the popularity of other arm projects would stop that.

      - the constant hostile attitude agains anybody that has some critical thoughts. I'm even 80% sure that seeing the classic liz remark about the slashdot community, that it is somebody from the rpi foundation that posted that remark.

      The difference is that in the slashdot crowd you have people that are more critical but that modelled on facts and knowledge. And thats a problem that the RPI community, like I've read on their forums a couple of fays ago. There is such a thing as free speech within the rpi community. Its disgusting to talk about free (like in speech also) products like linux and mention in the same time the rpi.

      My problem with the Raspberry Pi is that everything is late, because the foundation members overestimate their capabilities. They announce things that only come to fruition dramatically later or never at all (Where is my Android, Liz? You said you had it running how long ago? And now won't even tell us why you won't release?) There is no actual openness. They do things, then they tell us what they did, and we'd better like it.

      This would all be OK if they weren't pretending to have an open process and platform, but they have neither.

      I think ppl with a RPI do need to think about the box. Most people do not know what to do with them besides using them as a PC or a XBMC, and that is a big lack of imagination. Yes this things have very little power but are not as big as my PC in 2002. I have learned more bout linux in the past 2 months using the RPI than I had in the last 10 years.
      My RPIs have paid for themselves and are now producing what I consider profit, I have returned my cable boxes. My DVR is now a RPI stucked somewhere in the basement serving video anywhere in the house live TV too, tvheadend is one awesome software and RPI is perfect for it.

      I also have the most awesome home alarm/automation system thanks to the RPI. So whatever if you can't find uses for a cheap little PC is beause you lack imagination.

      Right now I am working on a guitar amplifier modeling with my RPI. Once the software is perfected I'll bury it inside one of my guitars and it will perfect for practise or playing in the park it puts out some really good tubey blues sound.

      I will admit that there are plenty of possibilities, as there are with every embedded platform/microcontroller that I have either designed or utilized in my research over the years. However, the Raspberry Pi, while nice for some, is nothing about which people should be constantly harping week after week, especially on Slashdot.

      You can do blinking LEDs with a simple 555,certainly no need for a PI or even a PIC for that matter.

    I'm wondering if there'll be any announcements about the Gertboard and similar prototyping tools for the Pi? It's a shame it went off sale about a week before I received my Pi.

    So, it's an "International Maker Meetup". What's this "6-8pm PST" crap, then? Wikipedia tells me it could be Philippine Standard Time (UTC+8), Pakistan Standard Time (UTC+5), or Pacific Standard Time (UTC-8).

    If you want hold an international meetup, use an international standard for time. UTC or GTFO...

      Yeah, what you said. In fact my computer here in Indonesia says this was posted at 07:40 am on Friday. So is the meetup on Thursday or Friday? It would be nice if people, you know, thought.

      You may be able to divine what timezone they mean by looking at the location of the MAKE offices. Since they're in the US, and the US only has one PST, that narrows it down.

    it's just sad that so many people refuse to even consider the possibilities.

    Lots of people have gone beyond considering the possibilities and tried to actually implement them, only to discover that the Raspberry Pi fails for one reason or another. And there's no shortage of reasons.

    The biggest problem by far is the badly broken USB controller on the Broadcom BCM2835 device that powers the Raspberry Pi. This has been acknowledged by the Raspberry Pi Foundation, and it is not fixable. It's a limitation of the SoC design.

    So while the board certainly has many useful applications, it also has many that just don't work if they demand much from USB. You can't treat it like a regular PC and expect the USB to "just work".
