APK's hosts file is almost 2 million lines (!). That means everytime you do a name lookup, it has to parse and compare 2 million records before it performs a DNS lookup. Of course, APK stores his "top 20 sites -- slashdot, goatse, meatspin, etc -- at the top his hosts file. Fun times when their IP Address changes!
But lets say you follow the link on a slashdot post to a new domain. DNS lookup takes .05 -.10 seconds. Scanning a 2-million line randomly generated hosts file (48 megs in size!) took .5 - 3.5 seconds. And after failing to find the name, it still has to perform real DNS lookup.
If you're using something memory intensive like firefox or using a low-memory device (like many android phones) you probably don't have 48 megs of free ram sitting around to cache your hosts file in the vfs layer so lookups will hist the disk every time and be on the slower side.
And are there really 2 million adware and malware sites out there? How many of those domains were abandoned and shut down long ago? Shady operators often buy up a name, use it for a couple of days, then cancel the purchase. Do you really want your DNS resolution to be 10-100 times slower because asdfs3w5fsdf.com served ads for 3 days back in 2003?
But I'm sure APK will "disprove" the above facts by using bold and CAPITALIZED words.

I wonder how many "errors" in maps, map software and apps are "trap streets"?

A trap street is a fictitious entry in the form of a misrepresented street on a map, often outside the area the map nominally covers, for the purpose of "trapping" potential copyright violators of the map who, if caught, would be unable to explain the inclusion of the "trap street" on their map as innocent.

They always make these 'phantom' streets dead-end streets to nowhere so they are unlikely to be a big problem.

Some street maps in the country as easments for future roads are in the map, even though they don't physically exist. The street next to a relative's of mine has that. The only indication in RL that a road exists is the power poles on the easment are 60 feet away from the fence in a field. The road passes between the poles in the filed and the fence. To use the "Road", you will need wire cutters to go through the barbed wire fence. There is not even a gate there.

Note that Apple does *not* use OSM in the US or even most of the world. They seem to be using OSM to fill the gaps in their primary data provider in countries like Pakistan and Africa.

I added my street, and Google Maps picked it up within weeks.
I added it using the Yahoo satellite image overlay, which lets you trace recent satellite pictures, add names to the streets, and basically "check in" your changes.
I don't have any idea what you're talking about, but this is the point - the data is open, and can be used by anyone. They don't have to be proud of who uses their data. I could use it and make ShiteMap 5000 which sucks and is wrong most of the time. Their claim is simply that the data is available, not that it is merged with other questionable data.

There are numerous towns that google map shows (dots anyway) that don't exist in my area. Oddly enough they have wikipedia entries even. But I have no idea how to tell google this town doesn't really exist. Maybe it was on some old government record from a hundred years ago. No idea how to tell Google and Bing about this. But at least I can try to get it corrected in OpenStreetMap.

You can always edit OpenStreetMap yourself and *ensure* that the changes are applied immediately :) Of course submitting a note would be appreciated as well but will depend on another local mapper noticing it and taking action.

As for why they exist, were/are there railroads in the area? A lot of "town" names exist on maps because they were railway water stops back in the days of steam. And that data just got carried forward through however many generations of geographic databases.

And Apple Maps in that test even beat Waze, which is based on OSM...

As predicted, Apple has fixed maps and is working to now exceed Google for quality of result. Not hard considering that Google has got complacent on maps; people just accepted the flaws because it was the only game in town.

I have and regularly use Waze, a really great map/navigation app available on all major mobile platforms.

The navigation is not too bad, a bit wonky at times - but where Waze really shines is in general driving around information where you just want to see what streets are around you, and also map updates.

You can pretty easily mark a problem on a map, and even better if there's a road that is not on the map you can go into "bulldozer mode" and add it. I believe the changes you make in the app are forwarded to community map moderators.

Waze also has great community features of marking hazards, like problems with the road, stuff on the side or police traps and speed cameras.

Waze seems nice, the big difference with OSM is that the OSM maps are fully and freely available. With waze, the actual map-data is company owned. I'd rather put effort in improving an open dataset than a company owned one.

Sorry, but no, Waze is completely proprietary, they tried to use OSM, but they understood that anyone with half a brain will be capable to capitalize on their improvements on OSM when creating competitor for their service and retreated. So please stop spread misinformation.

as others have noted, but to make it perfectly clear...
waze is not using osm data.
waze is not contributing to osm data.
if you contribute to waze, it goes in a closed, proprietary database that you are not allowed to use (or even obtain).
with osm, you get all the resulting dataset for free to be used for any purpose.

you can actually get all openstreetmap data. all of it. for free.
openstreetmap has much better coverage.
the only thing waze offers on top of osm is the mobile application... which would be great to see somebody build on top of osm, of course :)

I don't do any map updates, but Waze is pretty great for real time traffic issues. The best OSM app I have found is NavFree, and it is pretty weak - poor search (especially offline, though there you get no waze at all) and slow map updates from the OSM source. As a usable auto gps, waze is actually really good, Navfree my fallback for no data.

As the fine article notes, this feature has been in openstreetbugs for a long time, and has been actively used to fix issues in my area.

As for 1 million registered users, yeah right. Only if you include "users" who have never contributed anything, users who used to contribute but don't any more, and users who were blocked from contributing by the licence change. Their own stats suggest there's around 8000 contributors in any given month, so saying they've got 1 million "registered users" means nothing.

Of course, there are lots of "users" of the map who don't need to register, but those numbers are more difficult to get at.

I just submitted a bug report few days ago about a missing building (that was ready only a few weeks ago) and it is already added to the map. So there seems to be quite actibe members there.

That's really too bad.

So are there any good apps that are in fact based on OSM and contribute back? I wouldn't mind switching away from Waze if there was something close in utility.

I don't do a hell of a lot of remote DNS lookups due to my fav sites mostly being news aggregators like this site. I know this from router logs I did an analysis on here. FastFlux botnets are "the way" for a decade or more now. They reuse host-domain names (they paid for after all). MY program does a reverse dns ping resolve on my favorites (which beat indexing) in its speedup favorites tab. I load from an ssd (nanosecond seek) & speed up loads using 0.0.0.0 vs. 127.0.0.1 (larger & slower + creates a larger file). The diskcaching subsystem puts it in RAM, & the IP stack does the rest (from kernelmode fast as it gets) - You fail.
