Meet Pidora, the New Official Fedora Remix For Raspberry Pi

An anonymous reader writes "Today Fedora and the Seneca Centre for Development of Open Technology (CDOT) announced the release of Pidora 18, an optimized Fedora remix for the Raspberry Pi. It's based on a brand new build of Fedora for the ARMv6 architecture with greater speed and includes packages from the Fedora 18 package set. It's also the launch of the Pidora name. (The older version of Fedora for the Pi was called the Fedora Raspberry Pi Remix.)"

  Well, I'm pretty sure english-speaking users would be even more amused if the name sounded something like "faggot", which is just a bassoon in russian, so, yeah, immature public will always get excited over weird names. And before releasing something you might want to check if it sounds right in other languages.

  It won't take off in Russia (mainly because almost no one here uses Raspberry Pi), but this release will give something to talk about on our tech forums for couple of days for sure. Immature? Maybe. Amusing? Quite so.

  Hell, what's wrong with immature amusements once in a while? I bet most of bearded and mature 40+ years old Russian-speaking programmers will at least smirk upon seeing this news. Not to say anything about younger ones. There's already a discussion on habrahabr.ru with some... immature but amusing comments. Creativity, even in this form, is something that adds flavor to life, don't you think?

  As you maybe already know it's genitive case of "pidor" and "pidoras". These words mean "gay" in Russian and are obscene words.

  What I actually say is that the expected reaction from an average russian-speakin user is highly predictable. 'Pidor' is a banned word, it is highly offensive, maybe the closer analog will be your 'nigger'. Would you use such a distribution, like, 'Nigger Linux' ?

  This is a perfect example of brand blunder. No offence to the Canadian team, but a perfect brand blunder it is. It's probably not a direct equivalent of pushing a product badly mis-named for the target market, but it will eventuate in a whole lot of misunderstandings, all totally undeserved.
  A little bit of linguistic research would be appropriate. OTOH, we have GIMP, and everyone is getting happily along with it...

  It doesn't matter how many of them will ever use Pi. But it's the name of the Linux distribution. Naming official distribution this way makes it harder for overall Linux success. Linux user won't say that Windows is gay anymore. Because you know what? Pidora Linux! (translation from Russian: Linux of the faggot).

  The discussion is about translating the word from English to Russian, not vice versa. Try to call any Russian a "pidor" and see the reaction.
  A hint: there is no non-offensive meaning for that word in Russian.

  I'm not Russian, but imagine if some non-English speaking country comes up with a set of dolls for girls called "Howr and Beadch". Yeah, I'm not an English speaker either, but you can imagine, despite of how awesome those are, they would be a hit buyout for Mattel.

  ...which also didn't run Linux. But I'm curious: even if it were possible, what would you do with Linux on an Arduino?
  BTW, an ATmega644 - a chip very similar to the processors used in Arduinos - was used in one of the early Raspberry Pi prototypes (if one can call a device utterly different to the final product a prototype). It didn't run Linux either.

  Technically, you can run the rasppi versions on a 644 via external storage and the ATmega ARM emulator.
  Takes hours to get to an Emergancy she'll, and days to get to X but it has been done.
  QEMUs soft emulators will run on just about anything given a little effort.

I bought a couple to experiment with. Yeah, they're fine little boards you can ssh into. I thought the hardware accelerated video was going to be the killer feature, so I got a few of the XBMC images, played some videos, and, then googled to find all the people who are also complaining about blocking artifacts, lockups, and generally buggy video decoding on the things. Got the latest firmware updates, etc.
So, useless for that purpose, but it doesn't say so on the tin. Maybe I'll grab Pidora and set them up as vnc clients screwed into the back of a display. I think they can manage that OK, but from what I can see they're still prototypes.
I thought they'd be my kids' C=64's, but buggy doesn't encourage good learning.

Start with libusb and if you find that you are having problems, use 'perf' to see if the kernel part is really the problem. I think you will find all of your time is going to be spent in the USB hardware itself, and the USB driver, once you get the data out of that, user vs. kernel is not going to be noticable at all. Best of luck, and I bet you, in the end, you pick a better hardware platform for your project (hint, go buy a Beaglebone, it actually works and the tiny increase in cost more than makes up for the time you will waste fighting the RPI hardware.) greg k-h --

  Yeah, it is a pity the 2D & 3D performance is total crap. I would of loved to write/tweak the OpenGL ES drivers for it, but thanks to Broadcom for not exposing ANY of the low level registers.
