Wii Street U Uses Google Maps to Create 'An Immersive Experience' (Video)

Nintendo says, "With Wii Street U powered by Google, you can step into Google Street View with an immersive experience that feels like you’re actually there! View a 360-degree Google Maps Street View of locations all over the world using the Wii U GamePad motion controls. Use the GamePad touch screen to type in an address or location and explore, or instantly travel to over 70 fascinating, hand-picked locations around the globe." It all looks lovely, but can't we do most of this with Android phones? And couldn't a smart developer make the Google Street View Android phone experience even more immersive, so we wouldn't all need to buy a Wii U? Nintendo, we love you, but the Wii U still looks pretty dead unless it gets some major rethinking, and this Street View app doesn't seem to be it.

    I'm almost certain to not buy any other consoles this generation, and I like my Wii-U, but this app is really lame. The "tablet as window" input paradigm is kinda clever, but also not worth the physical effort involved. Oculus rift looks like a better approach to this same concept. I'd rather see street view with that.

      I don't know what people expect this to be. Why is google maps supposed to be the killer app for every smartdevice? Outside of driving directions, it's generally pretty useless.

      I mean, wow, pictures of the Eiffel tower. Now I don't need to visit France, I suppose.

      I played with this for 5 minutes at PAX East in March. I'd echo that 5 minutes was a perfect amount of time to experience this program. One thing I did that I've never seen on the real StreetView, was that I found I could actually go into one of the stores (Gnommon Copy, or something) in Cambridge's Harvard Square area. The BuildingView integration with StreetView was definitely neat.

      I don't know how slow it is so I don't know if this is possible but what I'd love is the ability to defend my own street from zombies, help a team of my friends defend famous places, and stand outside and laugh while I don't defend my exgirlfriend's house.

      When I was a child I was amused with an (not that small) atlas for months!

      Now I'm not. This street view can be quite interesting for a child for a long time.

      Yes a video game system with only Google Maps would suck.

      I would pay for a video game system built into a force feedback wheel that let you race on streets in Google Maps, but they'd have to improve their road-sensing considerably. It needs to emulate the actual dips and bumps.

      Why all the Wii U hate?

      It's not just Wii U hate. The console wars are as old as consoles themselves. Buying a console costs a lot of money and limits your choice of games, which is a big emotional investment. People like to defend their purchasing choices, and are often unpleasant about it. Aside from that, there are some specific factors relevant to the new generation and Slashdot in particular:

      * Anti-Microsoft sentiment from Windows spills over onto the XBox.
      * Anti-Sony sentiment from ongoing IP-related arguments spills over onto the PS3.
      * Anything that involves DRM of any kind causes a fuss.
      * Slashdot has a lot of gadget geeks who want to use game consoles for things other than gaming. They tend to overestimate the importance of non-gaming features.
      * The Wii (and Wii U) are "casual" gaming platforms for "casual" gamers. The (somewhat artificial) distinction between "casual" and "hardcore" gamers is hugely controversial and bitterly fought over. This also comes into play when people bring up tablet and smartphone gaming.
      * New consoles normally only have one or two good games on launch. Marketers have to sell the consoles by talking up the hardware and non-gaming features to their chosen target audience. This ties in with everything I already mentioned.
      * The success or failure of a console is determined by whether third-party companies decide to support it. Perceived success is very important here. There's a lot of money on the line for the manufacturers and the people who paid top dollar for the new consoles.
      * In previous generations, we all argued over which console was best. This time, we're arguing over which console is least bad.

      In most generations, there's a clear winner in terms of sales and games. Most recently, the Wii won on sales by selling a ton of units to casual gamers while the PS3 and X360 split the hardcore market. The question today is, can the Wii U repeat that tactic? And can either the PS4 or X1 gain an advantage over the other? With similar hardware and lots of cross-platform games, the manufacturers are clearly hoping that non-gaming features will be a deciding factor. It's happened before -- the PS2's ability to play DVDs was a huge selling point -- but seems unlikely to happen again. As usual, it'll almost certainly come down to the games. If this console generation does poorly, we might see a resurgence of PC gaming.

      Personal opinion: As someone who's been playing PC and console games since about 1990, I'm not very interested in the Wii U. Ever since the N64 Nintendo has mostly relied on their own games to push their platforms, and there's only so many times I can play Mario, Zelda, and Metroid before I get bored. And the foray into motion control is very gimmicky to me. I would like to see more PC-focused games. The biggest difference between consoles and PCs is the controls, and there's a lot you can do with a keyboard and mouse that just doesn't work on a gamepad.

      Yup, makes it seem like the article has all the criticism. However, it's Roblimo's comments. Nice of him not to start a new paragraph.

      I don't have a Wii U and don't know yet whether or not I will buy one. And I don't really care one way or another. But this criticism is mis-placed in this particular story.

      I used to love this place, now it's more fun to troll than to actually contribute anything. And I no longer post under my username, because I don't care.

      Really, if so, it's just lazyness on the part of the complainer. There's plenty of annoyances/stupidity that Microsoft has done directly with Xbox that deserves scorn. Examples: RROD, requiring Xbox live subscription to use Netflix, requiring stupid "points" to buy stuff, etc.

      Anti-Sony sentiment from ongoing IP-related arguments spills over onto the PS3.

      Is the rootkit on cd an "IP-related argument"? How about Sony losing their customer records?

      A company putting out a decent product that makes missteps or show character issues like the above examples still deserves scorn and criticism. Haters who kick a dead horse repeatedly should be hellbanned.

      Sure but only one of those hit +5 and the one that did said it was "pleasant". I'd hardly say that isn't giving it a free ride, especially compared to the number of criticisms of Steam that always get downmodded. I'm not saying people don't criticise it, just that when they do they're nearly always slapped right down even if they're legitimately complaining and stick to the facts. I still remember when Steam started regional pricing, and when some people bought CoD Steam codes one year from one country and activated them in another only for Valve to remove their access despite it being a legitimate purchase. If EA or Activision did these things there'd be massive drama here, but when Valve did them people were actively defending it.

      It always starts updating and using my bandwidth when I don't want it to and I've had a number of issues with DRM on it ranging from not being able to play Dawn of War II which I bought a physical copy of but required Steam activation because their servers rejected activation for a few days, to Defcon randomly only working in a trial manner, to a couple of games not playing at all in the past when their servers have randomly just said no for some god unknown reason.

      There are fanboys all across the net, Apple, Sony, Google, even Microsoft, but there are also Valve fanboys and Slashdot is their hive. That's okay, people have their opinions, but it's a combination of the hypocrisy and the change of opinion here that's annoying. The same people who are quick to attack DRM if EA, Activision, Ubisoft, Microsoft or Sony do it are the same ones who nonsensically and hypocritically defend it from Valve. It's sad because there was a time when Slashdot recognised the problems with DRM universally and was very vocal about it whoever it was from, but it's a genuinely successful pursuit of the slippery slope, because although DRM by it's inherent nature always offers a worse scenario for the end user than no DRM, it's become deemed acceptable from some vendors. As such it's no wonder the likes of EA et. al. are trying to push it further - because the weak minded fools defending it in the likes of Steam have deemed it acceptable there, companies are going to continue to try and tighten the noose further when in reality we should still be pushing for no DRM at all because still, to this very day, all it does is harm legitimate customers.

    That aside... the Wii U's far from dead. If anything I'd say it hasn't even lived yet. What it needs are games, first party, be they classic IPs or new ones. It's a game console, guys. Give us some good games and you can take all my money.

      I'm not sure how relevant that is. The top comment on that link shows that the PS2 outsold the PS3 for quite a while immediately after the PS3 was released, and the PS3 didn't die.

      My guess is that people keep buying the old generation console until there are enough major games that only run on the new one. There aren't that many major titles for the Wii-U yet, so I wouldn't say its sales are too surprising.

      Agreed. Its having a similar start as the 3DS did. Its only real weakness is the dearth of good games. Even looking through what's coming out, its a bit weak.

      I've got one, and the family like it a lot for what it is. We've got nintendoland, super mario, skylanders giants, batman, and lego city undercover.

      I'm looking forward to the DLC update to mario "New Super Luigi U", along with Pikman 3. I know the kids will want the next skylanders installment which has been announced along with Yarn Yoshi, given how much they liked the Kirby yarn title for the Wii.

      The re-release of Windwaker in HD will be great for players who missed Windwaker on Gamecube, but I'm not sure I'd buy it myself having already finished the original.

      There is also another new Zelda title in the works, that will likely be a must-buy for me.

      If you skipped the Wii the Wii-U is good value, being backwards compatible. But otherwise, its still a bit weak.

      I'd love to see a new Fire Emblem strategy game, or a BattleToads. Could do some great stuff with the touch screen controller there. The console lacks a good Kart racing game , ssbb title. FZero's been away for a while too now. And another good metroid outing is due. I'm hoping the planned Eternal Darkness "spiritual successor" shows up as well.

      And there's always room for new franchises.

      Nintendo's been like this for a while now, for most of their launches- short on good launch titles, but picking up steam usually within a year of release. You're right in comparing it to the 3DS, which now has too many games for me to afford, compared to when I first bought it, and only one game seemed even remotely interesting.

      You list a lot of good games required- Mario Kart will undoubtedly be included, SSB will not only be included but cross-compatible with the 3DS version I hear, F-Zero's in the works, we're due for Metroid, and there are several studios interested in bringing back Starfox. Right now it's pretty empty, but give it some time and we'll see what Nintendo can do.

      And if you haven't already, for the love of all that is holy, pick up Fire Emblem Awakening. Easily the best in the series with fantastic writing, blew me away with just how good it was.

      Do you have any idea at all at just how much effort Nintendo has put in towards making their online interactions kid-safe? It actually blows my mind.

      The new 'social area' on the home screen, lets you post questions, comments, and even freehand doodles... and they pop up on other peoples wii-u.

      Any normal person would have expected it to be just a constant stream of pictures of cocks and cleverly slightly obfuscated vulgarity... but its not. I don't know how they did it, and its actually pretty impressive. Props to N for that.

      But I do feel sorry for the guy whose job it is to reject submitted cock doodles all day though.

      I agree and disagree. The Wii-U just doesn't have enough for me to take the plunge, there's none of their first-party games that are really worth a damn, none of the big block-buster titles that, in your words, are getting old.

      Those are the same titles that third-party publishers must compete against, and Nintendo is still really good at making games. I would argue they did create something with the Wii, they took the familiar (Metroid and Zelda come to mind) formula for the games, and expanded on them using the Wiimote. Skyward sword was a pain in the ass due to inaccurate controls with pointing and waving from a distance, but all the general wide movements for sword hacking worked just fine. Metroid Prime 3 actually worked well with the wiimote in my opinion. Mario Kart with a no-kidding steering wheel was also pretty fun. With only minor input changes it still has a different feel than the re-churn of CoD/MoH or NCAA/NFL/NHL/FIFA 20xx game.

      I can't speak for all the Wii/other Nintendo console owning people not buying the Wii U, but personally the lack of first-party games is pretty much why I don't own one yet. Something completely new like Pikmin was would be just as good as a new Mario or Zelda in my opinion. They have none of that. The Wii U, like the 3DS, is failing due to the simple proposition that people buy gaming consoles for the games, and the Wii U simply doesn't have any system sellers at the moment. ZombiU actually does look interesting to me, but I'm not going to buy a system for just one game.

      Yep. The reason the Wii U isn't selling is that there are only about 4 worthwhile games for it right now.

      Nintendo needs to get some new titles out there.

      I don't get how people say this. They re-use characters and art styles, sure. But the games themselves are usually pretty innovative, and even if elements are retained, gameplay is usually radically different.

      Compare the original SMB, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy.. How is this the same game?

      Now compare every Call of Duty title (and pretty much every other shooter).. Other than graphics, they really are the exact same thing.

      The people chirping about Nintendo retreading the same tires are the same guys with a big hard on for Half Life 3. How long does it take Valve to re-release the exact same FPS?

      You mean, like what Sony and Microsoft are doing? So far, I've been unimpressed with the launch information of either console, which basically promise more of the same.

      If you want to blame anyone, blame the consumer who demand the same games over and over and rewards Nintendo by buying the games by the truckload. There is a reason why there are a ton of Mario games: they sell.

      Please note that the Wii U will likely be the ONLY console currently that is backwards compatible. The XBone is apparently not BC, and the PS4 has the obvious issue of the processor change making that difficult to support BC.

      So if you have Wii software, it should be playable on the Wii U. You'll still need the wiimotes and possibly nunchuk, but newer games might still need those for multiplayer aspects anyways (like the Mario Bros. U game).

      The difference is that Mario has been effectively the same game for about 30 years, whilst games like Halo and so forth at least have distinctly new story lines with distinctly new environments each time. That's why Nintendo is getting bitched at, because they're not just releasing a new iteration of the same franchise, they're releasing pretty much the exact same fucking game each time. Yes I know you can come up with absurdly weak arguments like "But Halo is just a shooter each year!" and ignore the fact that new multiplayer maps, new storyline, new environments is still infinitely more new content than Mario gets each time it's remade but it's silly because the amount of innovation and efforts put into rehashes at Nintendo with it's franchises is still clearly far less than that of it's competitors and that's the problem.

      Where who-gives-a-fuck is one of the most numerous and profitable segments of the gaming market. FIFA isn't my thing but it's a top 3 or so selling game every single year so it's not surprising that there is demand given the popularity of such titles.

      So the problem is effectively that Nintendo is doing nothing new with it's existing franchises rehashing the same old game over and over, whilst failing to get some of the most popular non-Nintendo franchises on board. Not surprisingly, that is why people are saying "What's the point of the Wii U?".

    Wii U looks a damn sight better than the new Xbox, which I believe Microsoft has named the Xbox Catastrophe. (It goes along with the Calamity operating system that they released for PC/Tablets.)

      Softmod the Virtual Wii and plug in your usb drive with hundreds of Wii, Wiiware, and Gamecube games to tide you over.. I'm sure you haven't played them all, and there are plenty of gems amongst them.

      If that gets boring install a slew of emulators.

      The only reason I bought a Wii-U now is to get in before the next hardware revision closes that hole.. The games will come later.

      It doesn't- but the Wii U emulates the wii, which emulated the gamecube, and if the software is there and you're loading it all from a USB drive, it might be possible.

      I'd love to try this out, but lack the console. I fully intend to get it... once there are games I'm interested in playing, just like every other console I've ever purchased.

      Huh, I also thought the Wii's backwards compatibility was done in the hardware. At any rate, you needed a GCN controller for GCN games on the Wii, which the Wii U lacks the slots for.

    Wii-U.. WHAT ITS NOT AS POWERFUL AS PS4 this thing is dead in the water.

    Nintendo is a small company, 5000 employees. Per employee, it's the most profitable company in the world. Unlike any other developer, they have cultivated and generally respected their IPs. Being a small company, and being focused on the overall quality of their AAA titles, it takes them a while to get them out. They average maybe one AAA game a year. In between they placate their fans with remakes and such.

    Remember when Sonic games were playable and fun? Sega doesn't, they fired all those guys. Jak and Daxter, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Oddworld, etc, etc etc.. All those franchises started out great, until the IP was licensed to the lowest bidder, and turned shovelware dogshit.

    Nintendo is doing just fine. Realize that they do not need to outsell anybody to stay afloat.

    SNK lasted forever, despite selling about 7 Neo-Geo home consoles, and maybe 4 Neo Geo CDs. If not for shitty management, they'd still be around. Sega was pretty much the same story.

    Don't worry about Nintendo. And who cares if you don't like their street view app.

      Every generation Nintendo loses more and more 3rd party devs. Its already at the point where buying a nintendo console means a rich but limited selection of games. This puts the machine at a distinct disadvantage in the marketplace. Add to the fact that they are being chewed at from both the top (PS4/Xbone) and the bottom (mobile/small consoles), Nintendo has a rough road ahead.

      They most definitely gained 3rd party developers last generation with the Wii coming from the GameCube. This generation already appears to be unfolding poorly 3rd party wise, but I'll give it time like I did the 3DS.

      This past year it made a relatively small profit ($142million), last year it made an outright loss.

      Even with this past years profit that's only $28,000 per employee. In contrast even Microsoft with it's profits down for the year made $197,000 per employee, Google made $200,000 per employee and Apple made $573,000 per employee. That's right, Microsoft/Google made roughly 7 times the profit per employee and Apple 20 times the profit per employee of Apple.

      You know fanboys are on desperate ground trying to justify their position when they have to resort to the most absurd of lies.

    I don't know much about the statistics and trends of the console market, but the Wii U was just what the doctor ordered for myself and the wife. Have spent about an hour each day the last few weeks switching between N64, SuperNES, and Wii games and Mario U. All great and timeless short attention span games. I think I've made my choice this generation. She doesn't relate to very many XBox games and never had a reason to start up the Playstation. For me the interface is friendlier than the other consoles. I feel like I'm watching TV on Idiocracy every time I boot up the 360 and see those adverts (But at least it's got lectrolytes!). Dead? I guess I'll just go down with the ship.

    It seems that a lot of people are generating FUD, again, because they want the system to fail.

    The system is great, the games we have so far are fun, and that's probably about the same purchase rate as on the Wii. We have a PS3, but that is only used for watching movies, which I never thought would be the case. The games just aren't compelling.

    The Wii U will do fine, and will sell many units when the 'big' Nintendo titles release.

    Amazing how cheap people are with video games compared to houses and cars given the time spent on them. A wii U is only two car payments at most--and that's a base-level economy car with a sizable down payment. And there's very little maintenance of a Wii U and no requirement for insurance. Really. If I wasn't so busy I'd love to spend money on a Wii U AND an Xbox One or PS4 just for the Nintendo exclusives (smash bros/zelda/mario kart end of story).

    1) They complete screwed up this software. The handheld device does not act like a map, it cannot display a map. No that function is reserved for the non-interactive Hidef television. Meanwhile the ability to view the surronding area is displayed on the low-res touch screen device. It looks cool but use it for 5 minutes and you very quickly reaalize that they got it backwards.

    2) The wiiu is dead and dying. The only way I see to pull the Wiiu from the fire is to release an open SDK. Sure people will emulate, and hack, and do other things but people will buy them off the shelves faster than nintendo could create them. Also nintendo would have a released a new era of interactive development programs. Lets see if they step up to to plate or allow someone else this opportunity.
