First Batch of Libreplanet 2013 Videos Released, Hosted Using Mediagoblin
Via the FSF: "The first round of videos from LibrePlanet 2013 is now available for streaming and downloading. LibrePlanet is an annual conference sponsored and organized by the Free Software Foundation, with LibrePlanet 2013 being the best one yet. ... This year we set out to make sure LibrePlanet featured fully functioning live video streaming using only free software, and it was a great success. The videos are now available for viewing in VP8/Vorbis, both free media formats, and are hosted on an instance of GNU MediaGoblin, the social media sharing platform which many of you helped support."
The rest of the videos should trickle onto their Mediagoblin instance over the next weeks. All of the videos are freely licensed (looks like a mixture of CC BY and BY-SA 3.0).
Aka WebM, so if you can YouTube...
All include weird accents like LibreVox.
Firefox, Opera, and Chrome/Chromium support VP8/WebM out of the box. Internet Explorer just needs the following codecs installed:

No.. that's just your life. Things are still happening in the free software world. Great things. The difference between us is you were a dabbler and I was a doer. And/or my opportunities/desire/determination allowed or made it possible and yours didn't.
Unlike you I founded a company out of college, got filthy rich off free software (ok, a bit of an exaggeration, I'm still working on it, although doing better than most with a full time job, and the company is looking like the next Redhat, and we're not even in the 'profitable' server business), and am contributing back to a society (ok, I really don't like society, but at least I'm trying to change it).
My little company has literally done more than most in a way I'll never get credit- and I don't care. There is more to contributing to free software than most people would recognize. You don't have to develop the next big free software project to make a major difference.
I'm also starting a family and have a boyfriend who I just happened to meet at LibrePlanet 2013 :)
If your part of the 'in' crowd you can probably guess who this is. The core of the free software community is still so tiny despite a significant number of contributors!
Free software doesn't have to mean jobless and poor. I'm proof of that.

See that's how dead Open Source is...all that's left is some inbred clique running around congratulating each other at their own conferences, although since they're so desperate to have any women around that i'm sure the affirmative action is profitable for you...but until Linux is good for anything besides running Apache I have to move on to shit that is actually useful for real productive work.
free software needs to start leading rather than following, just about every noteworthy foss product is a generally crappier knockoff of a proprietary one (notable exceptions include the linux kernel and blender) or just a me-too product. open source is supposed to be about innovation, that is where new product categories and new innovative software packages should be coming from but they arent, even when open source products are used (like linux) its the proprietary companies that create the parts that end users actually want to use. free software should be leaps and bounds ahead of its proprietary competition but in the majority of cases it isnt.
so what is it that you are doing? i hope its not some me-too product.
I'm looking for an web application I can use to do this, to make it easy for people who attend an event to share photos within a restricted group. Does MediaGoblin provide the ability for me to publish photos taken of family birthday parties, school events. etc. and restrict who views the photos to only family members / school members, etc.?
Yes, I'm fully aware that someone within the group can copy the photos and post them to facebook. That isn't really a concern because the assumption is that the person would also have been at the event and had an opportunity to take the photo (or a similar one). What I'm trying to facilitate is enabling Grandma to view the Christmas holiday photos, but not the school community.

Firstly, Free software !== Open Source.
Secondly, no. neither Free software nor Open Source have been about innovation. Free software it is a philosophy concerned with Freedom. Open Source is a development methodology which has to do with openness and collaboration.
Thirdly, there is innovation from the Free/Open Source community, it just tends to be at a lower-level than most end-users give a crap about. Then there is also the "problem" of openness - innovations tend to be suggested and discussed openly before they are implemented, so are no longer considered so "innovative" by the the time they get released.
Do you know the same I.T as I do? Even in days of yore OSSland was the centre of many interesting developments eg. most of the embryonic internet technologies... and also more sexy/interesting stuff eg. network/internet gaming pioneered by netrek, mudds etc... social stuff (eg. IRCd etc...). More recently the whole idea of a software repo was knocked off by Apple, and now Microsoft. GUI innovation has really flowered in the OSS world for the last 10 years... although there have certainly been some stinkers too I'll admit. The guts of the internet... the machinery that makes everything tick... is almost pure OSS because that's where the interesting stuff is happening. Is there much else to todays computing world?
Catchup? Linux et. al. started at the front in the internet server space and stayed there. OSS has been the only choice for browsers for at least 10 years now, and other software such as vlc, thunderbird etc... are many peoples preferred applications, and I've been seeing more and more LibreOffice. I'm even seeing Ordinary People installing Linux (which worries me because of Gnome3 and other stupid things happening right now, but nevermind).
Ack... and how could I forget the front and centre of computing life now ie. the browser. So many innovations flowed back from the OSS browsers to IE and it's STILL behind.

I was hoping to watch them in good quality, not some blurry non-accelerated shit like VP8.
Only watch 1/3 of the video. Video always showed the speaker when it should have shown the projected screen with "voice over" by the speaker. "When you click this menu item, it brings up this box ..."

The quality of VP8 is as good as H.264. It isn't hardware accelerated, no, but modern CPUs are plenty fast enough. Hardware decoding will come in time... H.264 didn't have widespread hardware support out of the gate in 2005, either.

I end up having to download them and play them locally instead.
