ESA Taking Applications for Summer of Code in Space

phyr writes: "ESA Summer of Code in Space (SOCIS) is a program run by the European Space Agency. It aims at offering student developers stipends to write code for various space-related open source software projects. Through SOCIS, accepted student applicants are paired with a mentor or mentors from the participating projects, thus gaining exposure to real-world software development scenarios. In turn, the participating projects are able to more easily identify and bring in new developers. Applicants must be attending a European or Canadian university and will receive 4000 Euros for supporting one of the accepted open source projects. Applicants have until May 15th to submit their proposals and resumes. I'm particularly interested to have exceptional proposals for the NEST project."

Their claim is a bold-face lie. The ESA has always been ruled by CONservatives that hate technology and hate the truth. They, like the Republicans that rule the USA, have no respect for science or technology. Their kind hates those things and thus hate us. In this case, they are destroying the dreams of children with their bold-face lie. It is not in space.

You're right about the ESA. They have changed from being a technical organization to a political one. They no longer have any interest in space. They only want to funnel money into the pockets of rich old white men. This "not in space" contest shows they have no actual interest in space.

Since ESA depends on it's member states for it's funding and the funding is given on the basis of the political objectives of the states, ESA it by it's nature a political one and always has been. But that does not exclude being a technical one as well, which is it, and quite deeply.

The "rich old white men" are in fact the european space industry, which ESA supports and promotes as one of it's primary functions.

      Your ignorance appears boundless.

You a resume and proposals to work on your Open Source projects. There's something you're not understanding about Open Source, its culture and the whole point of a participatory Summer of Code style event.

What an elitist ivory tower bag of bollocks, even the wording on the post is strange "I'm particularly interested to have exceptional proposals" and then you go visit that NEST link and they're not even articulate enough to summarize what NEST even is or does.

Don't strain your necks looking down from that Ivory tower guys.

I get that you're complaining about the clarity of the post ... but your critique of it isn't very clear, either.

The problem is, they linked to SOCIS, and to the NEST SOCIS page ... rather than linking to something like the list of organizations that are willing to mentor, with links to descriptions of the
tasks they'd like people to propose to do

Very few of those pages include 'about this project' type information ... so instead the students join our IRC channel and start asking questions. You'd think this would be annoying, and I guess it could be, but you can learn a lot about the candidates by what questions they ask, and how they respond to your questions (and/or heckling, in my case).

disclaimer : I was a mentor for the 2011 SOCIS on a project that I don't even work on. (the task was to have their software use some APIs that I help to maintain).
