Jono Bacon Leaves Canonical For XPRIZE
An anonymous reader writes "Jono Bacon, who has been Ubuntu Community Manager for Canonical for nearly eight years is moving on to join the XPRIZE Foundation (known for incentivizing solving major issues, such as the Google Lunar and Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZES) to be Senior Director of Community."
"Mmm, bacon ..."

such as the Google Lunar and Qualcomm Tricorder???????????????
Those are trivial hobbies for autistic anti-social neckbeards.
You want to solve major issues? How about charting a course for the human race for the next 50 years? Energy, food and what social model(s) we'll need for the new low-energy no-growth future?
Jono is a face and voice of Ubuntu I've always respected. During my years with Linux, I've been an on-again/off-again Ubuntu user, but despite that I still enjoyed his Q&A sessions and the way he carried himself on G+ and the like. He just seemed human.
While I am undoubtedly quite sad to see Jono leave, the nature of the position he's moving towards sounds like a great fit. Best wishes, Jono!
No doubt "Mr. Community" got tired of defending the massively unpopular decisions by Canonical (Mir and Unity) and working for a spacey control freak.
Sad to see him leave Ubuntu, but XPRIZE will no doubt benefit. He's always seemed to be a great motivator for a community, and a level headed guy that can balance the conflicting interests and passions. I think Ubuntu has improved from his participation, but he has been there awhile (especially in tech). Maybe some new blood could also help Ubuntu.
Here's to seeing good things from Jono at XPRIZE.
This is obviously a clever viral marketing stunt in order to announce LugRadio Live 2014.
Thanks for the flowers.
Eight years is a long time in tech. Jono has done much for the Ubuntu community. As an open source supporter and Ubuntu user, I will miss his contributions and thank him for his excellent work. He's a great motivator and an interesting author with much to contribute. No doubt he will do well for XPRIZE.
As plugs for your new book go, that was beyond subtle.
Good luck matey. And don't forget us coders back in Blighty's Midlands that you left behind for a new life in... ooh, look, it's actually not raining outside! What were we talking about again?
(Jono's new book is called "Dealing with Disrespect" and is available wherever your search engine takes you. No, I'm not affiliated.)

Many thanks, Andrew!
Does he argue for something different than 'don't feed the trolls'?

It is more subtle; it is more about putting all communication in context so the unconstructive content doesn't cause as much damage, and you can pull out the best bits of feedback to improve as a person.
I see. But I asked because the root of this thread doesn't have any constructive content... therefore you should have just ignored it, IMHO.

Even though you have a book about dealing with being flamed, but it would be way more enjoyable for Slashdot readers if they could just enjoy the "Slashdot experience" and just write trash about you without having to worry about you reading it.
I'm not really familiar enough with you to be able to libel you, but I'm sure there are at least some folks who would be enjoying themselves far more if they hadn't seen your name in the comments section. It has a chilling effect on discussion.

Yeah, but then nobody would've had an excuse to plug his book. QED.

My big hunk of manflesh is leaving Canonical for greener pasture? I'm shattered.
Not really, no.
:wq
He used Windows for all his videocasts because Ubuntu doesn't cut it when it comes to multimedia.
Keep communitizing the communities with community-based tools, Jono!
He's got the insider information that Shuttleworth is going to pull the plug on Ubuntu. The writing was on the wall when the Ubuntu smartphone failed to meet its funding goal.
Oh, PS:
The content of this communication clearly demonstrates lack of approval, but is still very unspecific about what they dislike about my record. The tone is quite rude and disrespectful, and the context appears to be passive (not the result of an argument, for example). Given the tone and the fact I don't know the person and they are outside of my target audience, I would ignore this. It is trolling...don't engage, just ignore and enjoy your life. Let's file this in disagreeable; it is quite rude and disparaging, but it is not abusive or threatening. [Bacon 2014]

I am a Ubuntu fan. Jono has been ethusiastic on G+ and I've been enjoying to see his posts. I wish the next community manager would be just like him. Best wishes for the future to both Ubuntu and Jono.
Jono is the fucking scumbag who called RMS a "child" for having a problem with spyware in Ubuntu.
Jono, you are the fucking scumbag who called RMS a "child" for having a problem with spyware in Ubuntu. You richly deserve nothing more than a Singapore Style Caning.
You made the opening post and put "Re:" in the subject just to make it look like you were actually replying to someone. Then got a buddy to follow up with a plug for your book.
Bring back LUG RADIO!
Anybody want a peanut?
Community died over the last couple years Jono was running things... This will be good for the community.
How lovely. :-)
Love the logic. I am terrible for calling RMS "childish" and then apologizing two days later, but your behavior is perfectly reasonable and justified for calling me a "fucking scumbug" who deserves a caning. Love it.
Delightful.
To be fair, your foot tickles.
What exactly has Jono done in the years he was with Ubuntu? Did he write any code? Does he have any numbers to show any of his actual successes? All I saw him do was weekly Q+A's where he used Ubuntu Social Media to pimp himself and build his following. The community is actually smaller today then it has been in previous years.
Also he always defended Mark Shuttleworth when he would insult the open source world and was really good at ridiculing contributors who said anything negative about Canonical.
Jono Bacon and David "Lefty" Schlesinger are the closest of friends, and are determined Enemies of Free Software. They suck the Corporate Satan Cock, and then these little Piggies Squeal for More.
marketing scum, nothing more or less. Gnu-Linux never needed marketing scum until the marketing scum demanded a seat at the table.
bullshit. page after page of blog entries still exist with you and Lefty chumming, slamming RMS and cheerleading for the corporate control of Free Software and its transformation into a controlled and contaminated version which breaks with the ethics of the FSF entirely.
I'm so old I can remember when Jono didn't sign in to \. under his real name. But then again I'm so old I can't remember the password to my sparkes account on here.
