Cybercriminals Ramp Up Activity Ahead of 2014 World Cup
wiredmikey (1824622) writes With the FIFA World Cup 2014 kicking off this week in Brazil, cybercriminals and scammers are working hard to take advantage of visitors to the World Cup in Brazil and those following the world soccer tournament online. In recent months, several security vendors have published advisories about the various scams, phishing and malware operations that target Internet users interested in the World Cup. While individuals from all over the world have been targeted, many of the malicious campaigns focus on Brazil and neighboring South American countries. While news that cybercriminals are zoning in on a large global event is no surprise, the scale and tactics being used is quite wide in scope, ranging from malware distribution and phishing scams, to fraudulent ticket sales, spam and other promising yet fraudulent schemes.For those visiting Brazil to watch the games in person, the cyber threats also include rogue wireless access points, ATMs rigged with card skimmers and Point-of-Sale malware.
People will exploit any opportunity to make a quick buck out of customers anywhere. This goes to show that you must be very careful when using electronic payment and ATMS anywhere. Better security will help too.

I don't "whitelist the net": Explain yourself there since *IF* anything, I blacklist known bad sites/servers that botnets & other threats use effectively "nullifying" them + their payloads (since they can't even talk back to mama IF you have one, & if you can't touch them & theirs in the 1st place, they cannot hurt you...).
As far as "whitelisting"?
I put 24 favorite sites @ the top of my hosts file (it's large, & Windows has a flaw in its slower usermode clientside DNS cache)
I disable it since it has issues with large hosts due to a fixed-size datastructure it loads & indexes which I have notified MS of YEARS ago & am totally correct on - they did nothing,
INSTEAD, I opt to use a combination of 2 FASTER kernelmode services in the diskcaching subsystem + tcp/ip stack itself - & yes, it works, also (saving the wasted CPU cycles, RAM, + other forms of I/O it used... BONUS!).
That "hardcoding" of my favorites equates to ~ 2-3 million indexed seeks laying it out in hosts as I do @ the top of the file, which goes unaltered into RAM for the fastest possible performance... & that too, works!.

Malvertising (per CISCO) is out of control, AntiVirus products (per Symantec) are only 55% effective... no folks: THIS? This IS the "wave of the future" of added speed, security, reliability, & anonymity (to an extent) online, since it works better by far (prevention IS the best medicine, not reactive removal & detection - this? Is PROACTIVE vs. antivirus... stops it BEFORE you can get it, & even IF you do? Botnets can't "talk back to mama" for orders... think of it like how Iron Man took out the central server in "The Avengers", you'll get the point of my analogy on that...)

(Now, *IF* you have trouble comprehending the analogy here I use @ the termination of my "std. post" regarding my program? I suggest you ask a user here (pretty popular & well-known who has a PC repair shop with many customers as his testbed) named "Hairyfeet", a peer of yours on /. - he turned from DNS servers (wasteful of power, vulnerable to redirect problems in security etc. which HOSTS fix no less on clientside systems) to AdBlock - he sees a SIMILAR effect but... he won't even argue on this (& that guy LOVES to argue (sorry Hairy, lol)) but, it's true... I just do it BETTER than AdBlock & even FIX DNS...).

We discussed this by email & had HUGE 'battles' here on /. regarding DNS vs. HOSTS (less complexity & electricity usage, RAM usage, CPU usage, etc.-et al) - funny he switched though!

So, I did the education & the professional hands-on in the trenches for nearly 2 decades now, & it changed MY LIFE for the BETTER by far (allowing me to empower others and to have a creative career I truly love in the art & science of computing I've done well in for a livelyhood, as well as in publications in this field + technical trade shows, commercial code to my credit sold by certified MS partners etc. - et al).
No hard work is wasted... it paid off.
So, the LEAST I can do, is help others vs. the threats I've noted in my replies and why.
Other methods (antivirus & my inferior browser addon competitors are failing, even DNS is under threat - this fixes that latter one, & does a BETTER JOB on far more levels, more efficiently than the former(s), by far... no questions asked).
I feel that once you find what it is you love + do for a living, it is YOUR DUTY as a human being to help others with it, if & when you can. I am with this.

I mean im sure its a huge problem that people like fans and ticketholders are going to be targeted, but customers have always enjoyed being the target of crime. The real issue is that we decided to bring one of the most expensive, prestigious sports competitions with an array of elaborate infrastructure requirements and expsnsive hosting obligations to a country with a 25% poverty rate and epidemic levels of child starvation and violent crime. Sure it makes Brazillian politicians and the cloistered elite feel special but when you factor the average brazillian into the equation it was a pretty god damn wreckless decision to take two billion out of their economy and piss it away on a single sports event.
Good people go to bed earlier.

Brazil isn't quite "first world." They may be soccer fans, but they are rabid, brutal, dismembering, beheading, soccer fans. This is something FIFA from which should stay as far away as possible.
Would anyone think selecting any African nation as a site for the world cup is a good idea? Brazil was a bad idea for similar reasons. "Bad Neighborhood."
What is a "bad neighborhood" or "bad area?" We seem to try to avoid a glaringly obvious issue by blaming the surroundings instead of the people. "Don't go into that bad area!" Is it the area that's bad? Is the the land? The flora? No. It's the people. Don't go around bad people! And this is where things become much more clear and clear why people seek to avoid the obvious. It's RACISM!
People need to give up linguistic obfuscation as a means of avoiding the truth. How many times will we change the word we use to avoid saying what we think? We went from negros all manner of other terms, which at the time were okay to say, but before long was recognized as offensive due to the meaning adaptation and then we moved on to another word meaning the same thing. Seriously -- how many words do we use to identify black people and of those which were intended to be "nice words" became bad ones? How did that happen? "Colored people?" Once good, now bad. Linguistic obfuscation is a way of avoiding and confusing the truth of a situation. What we're dealing with is a mass of people who do not behave well. And while no mass of people behaves well, white or otherwise, there are varying degrees which are clear to the observer -- very clear.
A problem cannot be solved, resolved, avoided or even mitigated by avoiding or denying the causes.
I would seriously love it if we could all get along and live together. I really would. I don't hate anyone because of what they look like. I hate the behavior as it is not conducive to the peace and harmony I want for all of humanity. But we can't have it without a common subscription to an understanding of what mutual respect means and how well we live our lives in accordance with that understanding. Different cultures/religions/peoples bring disparate understandings to the whole and that causes problems. If they can't be re-/solved, they must be contained. Is the Brazillian World Cup situation significantly worse than the London Olympics for the cybercrime aspects? I might expect that 'real world face to face crime' (pickpocketing, bag theft, etc. ) might be worse as you'd expect London (as part of a wealthier country) to be better policed than a poorer country with higher levels of local corruption and poverty such as Brazil, but are there big differences between the online crime situations (fake websites, email scams, etc.)? The latter would appear to be more transnational and not so affected by local social/economic/policing conditions.
