Winners of Raspberry Pi Photography Contest 2014

coop0030 (263345) writes Adafruit held a 2014 Raspberry Pi Photography contest that has completed with the winners selected. You can see the winning photographs as well as all of the entries. Andrew Mulholland, using a Raspberry Pi powered LEGO panobot, is the winning photographer. He's also provided a video of how his winning photographs were put together.

    The winning photo is very nice indeed.
    Some of the runner-up images are okay-ish, but overall the runner-up images do not look like contest material to me.
    I bet they were really glad when they received Andrew's photo, or this competition would've had a painful ending...

      If you haven't looked at the links, you may think he's being unnecessarily harsh.

      He's not.

      Apart from the winning entry, there's the usual collection of poorly-composed & poorly-lit random sub-happy-snap photos. Then there's the poorly-composed & poorly-lit random sub-happy-snap photos with crappy filters applied. And then there's the poorly-composed, poorly-lit, random sub-happy snap-photos with crappy filters & fake HDR.

      All taken with a cheap sub-smartphone quality camera & lens.

      That was my thought as well. The contest (which I'd never heard of until know) may well have "proved" that you can use a Rasberry Pi in photography, to the benefit (read:publicity) of the Pi... But the photographs themselves are generally much less than impressive in both technical and artistic quality.

      Honestly, the winning photo is bad too. It doesn't follow the horizon, thus is very distorted. And, there's a huge gap in the left. This only shows lack of patience in getting a good image. Thing is, I can get better photos with Hugin ( http://hugin.sourceforge.net/ ) holding a camera by hand than this one on a rig. If on a rig, it's alignment should be bullet-proof.

      Exactly. This is really just a photography contest where they forced the use of a bad camera (worse than my shitty old phone!), which is only gonna get used by techs/engineers and the like instead of artsy/creative type. 99% of the effort goes towards code or whatever other geekery, instead of composition, lighting, posing and everything else that matters. Meanwhile, those artsy/creative types are out shooting with decent cameras and turning out great results. I dunno what they were expecting.

      Agreed. To me the advantage of a cheap computer+camera is that you can program it to take pictures where humans can't go easily. Most of the pictures were ones people just took themselves, while holding the camera or putting some lego parts around it. The winning photo was nice, but nothing you couldn't do with a real camera.

      Look at the video. The camera isn't being rotated around the optical center (not even close), so it is not strange that the result isn't optimal.

    Raspberry Pi sucks. Just use a Pentium II desktop and a long cord, drive your panorama motor crap by controlling it from the parallel port.

    Wile I'm not dyslexic, I always need to retrace when browsing /. headlines containing a word matching p*ograph, especially when the British Phonographic Institute is mentioned.

    The "RichShumaker" picture looks like a CGI'ed image. I could put off the ears as being plastic, but the face looks waxy and the eyes/hair don't seem real either.
