Hacker Disrupts New Zealand Election Campaign
An anonymous reader writes New Zealand is facing its weirdest election ever with a hacker calling himself "Rawshark" progressively dumping emails hacked from a controversial blogger. This weekend, revelations forced the resignation of one Government minister and nobody knows what will drop next. Emails revealed that the blogger, called "Whale Oil", was in contact with both a government minister in charge of New Zealand's white collar crime investigations unit and with a PR man acting for a founder of a failed finance company then under investigation.
We need alot of more this kind of hackers.
They keep tabs on us, invade our privacy, no reason not to do the same to them.

He knows pretty much everyone of note down there, and is even running in the Election with an Internet Party.
The Whale Oil blogger was also involved in revealing a sex scandal involving the PM trying to remove a Mayor. Threatening text messages where sent and the NZ Herald newspaper put out a public appeal to unearth the sender. It turns out that the Caller ID was one of the free international Voip SMS local forwarding numbers that had for years been diverted by the local Telecom in their attempt to frustrate its users. When this Voip SMS connection was made known to the newspaper, details of how to crack the exchange were picked up by the Intelligence Services and within hours the anonymous Caller ID hole which Whale Oil had been using was plugged.
...sounds like a reference to that exact accented pronunciation of Rorschach's name in Watchmen (the original graphic novel, when Veidt calls the police to tip them off).

The National government have been feeding sensitive info to this vitriolic blogger called Cameron "WhaleOil" Slater (WO) and using him to do their dirty work.
There has been information "released" to WO under freedom of information, that had been denied other more legitimate journalists so that WO could launch his attack, there is evidence he was instructed as to which information to specifically request and the request was processed in an extremely short time.
This is what has brought down our (Ex) Minister for Justice (ROFL) Judith Collins. The filth washes right to the Prime Minister John Keys "Office" and as an ex corporate banker involved in the Derivatives trade there are quite a few people that are not surprised, only elated that the filth gets shown before our election and not after.
As if Prime Minister John Key does not have enough problems, Kim Dotcom has revealed that he will drop a bombshell on him. He is warning that something big will come out on September 15, just five days from the election. He says WikiLeaks founder and fugitive Julian Assange, who's holed up in Ecuador's London embassy, is set to take part in a pre-election attack on John Key. The addition of Mr Assange confirms the event will be about New Zealand's spying.

I'm a NZer, though I live in London now. When I lived in Auckland, an American exchange student once described NZ as the country that is like America was before everyone got fucked over by someone else. It is so painfully is true. Our naive innocence is now being exploited by a bunch of international con artists (dotcom and john key) and we are just being take for a joy ride. Give us another five years of this and we'll all become a bunch of suspicious unfriendly people like the rest of the world.
Possibly financed/orchestrated by NZ resident multimillionare Kim Dotcom (owner of Mega.com filesharing site and criminal with convictions for fraud who tends to frequently move countries to escape the law) as a way to get a tiny political party he has formed and financed to hold the balance of power in a left wing coalition and thereby have the leverage he needs to get laws passed to prevent his otherwise inevitable extradition next year to USA on copyright violations associated with a now defunct filesharing site he owned and got rich off. The left wing coalition are looking very unlikely to win hence this hit job to try bridge some of their large polling deficit. Kim is getting desperate as he is facing decades in Federal prison.
It is very telling that the political blogger/journalist who was hacked is something of a loose canon (right leaning ex tabloid editor) and was a major conduit for leaked information and rumour from across the political and social spectrum, yet only emails embarrassing to a few senior politicians in the current hugely popular centre-right govt were released. The blogger could release all his emails, to demonstrate the imbalance and hypocrisy of the opposition politicians, but can't without burning his sources. Even with these revelations (that amount to nothing more than that politicians surreptitiously talk to journalists and bloggers to get their spin out, and don't like it when senior civil servants in our supposedly apolitical civil service undermine them), the existing govt is one of most popular in NZ's history riding at around 50-55% in polls (vs next best at 25%) and highly likely to stay in power.
If the current govt lose after such tactics have been employed then it is a pretty nasty attack on what is otherwise one of the most enlightened and well run democracies in the world by win-at-any-cost ideologues possibly a few criminals and complicit media that is significantly left-wing biased.

5.) Protect you vs. dynamic dns using botnet attacks and stop their communications back to their C&C servers
6.) Protect you vs. domain generation algorithm using botnet attacks and stop their communications back to their C&C servers
7.) Speed you up for websurfing not only by adblocking but also hardcoding favorite sites
8.) Get you past a dnsbl you may not agree with
9.) Keep you off dns request logs
10.) Do all of those things and block ads (better than adblock) more efficiently in cpu cycles and memory usage
11.) Work on ANY webbound application (think stand-alone email programs, for example).
12.) Give you direct, easily notepad/texteditor controlled data for all of the above

The most positive thing about headlines and summaries like this is that it's painfully obvious nobody actually knows what's going on, and so is throwing big words around to sound scary and interesting without any substance actually being on offer. In short, it's clickbait. Though clickbait that these days might cost you your 4th amendment rights in the US.
I wish people would just write what they knew and understood. These days, any mention of "hacker", "hack", "hacking", "hacked", means "I have no idea yet I must yabber ever on!", and so is best ignored. Heck, attaching "cyber" to random words is more informative these days. Go figure.

Except botnet herders, advertisers, or inferior competitors. Which of those 3 are you? The rest of us love him for giving us what we need which is more speed we paid for to be online (that ads steal from us and infect us with malicious code at times), security against botnets/malware, phishers, spammers, and trackers online, along with better reliability against dns failure or redirect security issues.
