Maker Person Rich Olson Returns (Video)

In February we ran a video titled Rich Olson Embodies the Spirit of the Maker Movement. We aren't saying Rich is a superman, but more like everyman or, in this case, everymaker. He is a hobbyist who, like many others, shares his designs freely in the best spirit of open source. Today we have some more words from Rich that may help you if you are just starting to use a 3-D printer and similar tools either at home or in a makerspace. and a note: If you know someone we should interview, please email robinATroblimoDOTCOM.

I have a real problem with the prevalence of online Video in general. There are way too many 'how-to' things out there now that would be well documented by a list of bullet points on a well edited text document. Instead, all that is available is a rambling, fumbling, blurry video.

Video is the lazy way out and it promotes sub-literacy.

In this case, a day later I finally wondered what it was about, and clicked it. Whoops, no video. I guess luckily for dice, slashdot users would never run linux and flashblock, right? It does play the audio and show me the flashblock icon, but they did some kind of bullshit to capture the pointer, so I can't actually start it.

I listened to 10+ seconds, he starts off describing things as, "this is ...." OK, what is? It is a very low quality offering, I guess not surprising if it is the ramblings of Everyman. Which basically translates to "some Homer Simpson guy." If it was worth saying, it would be worth saying in an accessible way. Presumably he doesn't care about producing a good video, and is just doing his own thing. So let him do it. Don't try to make him into a public figure unless he's interested in putting some basic effort into communicating using modern mediums.

The biggest upside to this is that I don't ever have to worry about stuff like the brakes breaking because I put the fluids in wrong or something or a thief being able to pick the lock because I put it on wrong.

All the most difficult things I've done have been in my spare time. For example, I am a radio amateur - all that "amateur" means there is that I'm not restricted by commercial imperatives. I can still apply the knowledge I've gained from academic and professional experience. The most interesting developments don't come from the "professional" but from intelligent people interested in their trade. 1) hanging some poor kid on a barbed wire fence is wrong, period. A real man walks away from
people he finds offensive. There is nearly always no need to engage in violence and a real man
knows that violence is the last resort.

      2) Gay guys being honest and open means more women for straight guys. It also means fewer
guys having children because gay men cannot get pregnant. Fewer children means the world
will be less crowded. These are all benefits.

      3) You may well be gay yourself. Often those who worry about "gays" are secretly fighting urges
within themselves. As a heterosexual man I never worry about gays of either sex, though I
can say I'd like to have a threesome with a couple of bisexual lesbians sometime.
