Nokia Announces OZO 360-Degree Camera For Filming Virtual Reality

New submitter Sepa Blackforesta writes: Nokia has unveiled Ozo, a next-generation camera for capturing audio and video in 360 degrees. It is built for professional content creators and the company hopes the camera will become the leading device for shooting virtual-reality experiences for Hollywood. A formal launch and price announcement is planned for the fall. A Nokia press release reads in part: "OZO captures stereoscopic 3D video through eight (8) synchronized global shutter sensors and spatial audio through eight (8) integrated microphones. Software built for OZO enables real-time 3D viewing, with an innovative playback solution that removes the need to pre-assemble a panoramic image - a time-consuming process with solutions currently in the marketplace. OZO's filmed content can be published for commercially available VR viewing hardware such as head mounted displays (HMDs), with immersive, full 360-degree imaging and spatially accurate original sound. OZO also integrates into existing professional workflows and works with third-party tools, dramatically simplifying content production at all stages."

Why do you need a film crew? just use a bunch of the things and CGI them out of the shots. Heck, could just have fixed ones through sets if you are doing much shooting somewhere.

Cameras like this have an area of occlusion, caused by the cameras being physically a few centimeters apart, that the stand often sits in. I cannot speak for this particular model but let's just say you've got a diameter of something like a foot where a strategically placed stand would be invisible.

Oh man, I've been waiting for someone to figure out how to do this. Feels like the last critical piece of VR... "reality capture".

    - Experiencing a live feed of a skydiver/basejumper/surfer/other extreme sport, where you can look around naturally in 3D
    - A probe in space or on another planet
    - An immersive control system for robots
    - On and on. You can now tap into and share someone else's experience viscerally, either realtime or recorded.

    This is basically Strange Days.

I'm less than impressed by 360 videos so far. I'll admit that I have seen only 2: bjork's stonemilker music video and Aram Pan's North Korea YPT tour video.

The North Korea video I appreciate more, because you can look all around a location that most people will never visit. However, with both videos, I feel like I am playing "where's Waldo" with the content. Having 360 degree videos is fine, but I feel like a "director's mode" on/off toggle seems to be needed for people who don't want to feel like they are missing something interesting. I don't have time to explore every last location in a video game, and similarly I don't have time to rewatch 360 degree videos just to check every angle for easter eggs.

First you stitch all the left-camera views together. Then, in a separate image, you stitch all the right-camera views together. The trickier part is the math, which I don't really know how to explain here other than to say that it's not significantly different from the pano-mode on modern cellular phones.
