Id Software Founds a New Office In Germany

jones_supa writes: With some high-profile releases on the horizon, ZeniMax Media is expanding with a new studio in Frankfurt, Germany. Posted via Bethesda blog, reads the official ZeniMax statement: "As part of our continued global expansion, ZeniMax Media has opened (and is actively hiring for) a new technology development studio in Frankfurt – home to our German publishing operations. This team, an extension of id Software, will focus their efforts on idTech for DOOM and other titles under development at ZeniMax-owned studios." New positions are expected to pop up at ZeniMax's job listings.

      Id is shit anyways. No real talent there anymore and the games are recycled shit. The engine business aint doing all that well either since people spending millions for a piece of code expect something in return. You can basically use Unity for all the stuff brogamers ever need. Id has no place in competitive gaming either. They basically fucked everything up and even their success was an accident based on the tech by Carmack.

      Id is toast.

      They're some of the greatest game engine + graphics programmers in the world. They can do better than a Carmack-less id and they know it. Crytek is far from dead too.

      u r spot on ... they can still make some money with doom 4, but if that title happens to be mediocre has the previous titles, doom brand will be toast as well as id .... I doubt they will ever create something as remarkable as Wolfstein, Doom or Quake

      They certainly got stuck in a rut with the point, shoot, find keycard, access new area, repeat routine. Valve showed the world what a good single player campaign should look and act like with Half Life, which raised the bar, and id has never really stepped up to it; their games seem to be designed more to showcase Carmack's latest engine than anything else.
      That said, I just played Doom3 and Rage, both on sale at steam, and for the money (I got 'em cheap), they were fairly entertaining. Well, Rage more than Doom3, the latter was full of cheap shots and monsters that spawned or were released behind you, that got old fast. Rage was kinda fun, I liked the sniper mini-games, though the car controls on PC are too touchy, I'd rather use the mouse to steer than keys. I saw the preview of Doom4, and the melee attacks are awesome, but it's going to take a good deal more than that to keep the game interesting. Even the new snapmap feature isn't really bringing needed freshness to the franchise.

      I loved "Rage". I thought it was one of the best games I have ever played! I never understood why the game wasn't more popular than what it was. The "sniper" part was great...... In the words of who ever it was:...."Roll Em"!!

      Apparently it had numerous "bugs" when it was originally released, some of which were fixed by driver updates, but yeah, I had a lot of fun with it; the RPG elements added a lot to it, and the weapons and ammo selection were surprisingly diverse for id. Can't beat it for $12.

    said they wanted to shove hot pokers up the asses of Adrian Carmack, John Carmack,Tom Hall, and John Romero, I'm surprised Id will have anything to do with Germany. They are literally Nazis that want us to die. To die. That is the way of their kind.

      Germany is not the US. You are the one in the wrong if you think just because you are an American that you have the right to life. No. When in other countries you have no rights.       Nope, basic law is the constitution of Germany. It was supposed to be a temporary constitution before the reunification, but was adopted as a permanent one in a constitutional reform act of 1994. Furthermore, every federal state in Germany has their own constitution, although the basic law supersedes it, making them mostly worthless.

      The problem I have with Germany is the constant arrogance a lot of the German population continue to display. Considering their history, you would think they would be much more humble than a lot of other people. Besides being a geek, I'm a big gear head too so I view a number of automotive websites as well. You tend to meet a bunch of Germans on those sites and they display the same superiority attitude there. Really not sure where it comes from but they like to put a lot of other nations down but for some reason really harbor a serious disliking for Americans. They seem to be a people that don't completely learn from past history. One of things I find very interesting is there was a lot of denial about knowing about the local concentration camps even though trains full of people would go through town and yet come back through empty and never noticed anything different.

      Eradicating the gipsies, had they succeed would have been a big favor to all of Europe. The gipsy population is the one causing the most crime in EU, and because they don't obey any laws they become parents at 16 and grandparents at 28-30 and grow 3x the other population. May be you will think about it next time when the police finds your car being driven by a gipsy two towns over who says he only took it because it was raining and he didn't want to get wet, or your daughter raped in a park on her way back from school, or your grandparents throats slit because they could possibly give the gipsy that broke into their house more money and silver than what they already had. There was one such murder in Bulgaria just the last week. A 68 year old English woman was raped, murdered, the body partially cut and partially burned, all by a gipsy roma.

    Nowhere in the press releases nor in the ZeniMax job offerings it says which Frankfurt in Germany they have located their business. There is Frankfurt/Main, the financial center of Germany and a big traffic hub (largest airport, most busy train station etc.pp.), and there is Frankfurt/Oder, about 40 mls east of Berlin, directly at the border to Poland.

    I would guess they mean Frankfurt/Main, but you never can be sure.

      It's at one of the old castles... they used to house POW's there in WWII... had lots of automatic doors with food behind them... I can't remember the name off hand... The name of the castle sounded like Frankenstein, though... ;-)

      You have to distinguish between two types of censoring in Germany:
      1. Stuff that has been declared to be bad for the kids may not be advertised and may not be sold to minors. You won't find these type of games in the shelves. You have to ask at the counter. Sometimes games are modified to not fall into this category (f.ex. Half Life).
      2. Contents that is illegal (f.ex. walls plastered with Swastikas) is removed. If there is no version without illegal contents (f.ex. Wolfenstein 3D), the game may not be sold or passed on. There is no law against possession of these games, so you are fine if you got a copy before it was forbidden.

      According to Wikipedia Doom 1 and Doom 2 were in category 1 from 1994 to 2011. On top of that two bonus levels in Doom 2 had to be removed because of category 2. Doom 3 didn't have to be censored.

      I have no idea. According to the German basic law, federal laws preempt state laws.

      For example, the constitution of Hesse (where I live) allows death penalty in certain cases, but death penalty is not allowed in the German basic law. This, unfortunately, goes both ways - a lockout is forbidden by the Hesse constitution, but allowed on the federal level.

      I don't know what happens when federal and state laws are in conflict in the USA.

      US State Constitutions are state law, which isn't exactly worthless. They just aren't as impacting or short/memorable as the Federal one. They are wordy pieces of state law.

      What kind of "lockouts"? I assume it doesn't refer to lockout mechanisms to prevent amateur software from executing on game consoles.

      Those US states used to have real constitutions. Then the US constitution was written, supplanting the Articles of Confederation, that respected state constitutions. Then there was the War between the States, which ended with Federal supremacists having a position to impose anything. Now Congress can pass laws that incidentally abrogate state constitutions.

    Can't they just kill off this company already? It's already pathetic compared to its heyday. Classics like Doom, Quake, were such a great move for gaming tech and had the developer's hearts and personal ideas put into the games. Doom 4 is a shitty Halo clone with an "edgy" wrapper stolen from Brutal Doom (what a terrible mod to steal from as well).
