Vodafone Attack Hits Nearly 2000 Customer Accounts (asiaone.com)

Bloomberg reports that "about 1800" customers of UK telecoms company Vodafone had their account information compromised by attacks this weekend: "Hackers may have potentially gained access to Vodafone customers’ names, phone numbers and the last four digits of their bank account numbers. A 'handful' of customers have been subject to fraudulent attempts on their accounts, Vodafone said." (Also at the BBC.)

    "Vodaphone" in the summary? Yet they manage to spell it correctly elsewhere in the summary.

    Insert witty quip about editors not editing. Though I suspect the correct spellings were the unintended consequence of copy-paste summary writing.

      I imagine a scene in a Newbury boardroom in the 1980s:

      "With an 'F'. Not a 'PH'.

    2,000 ? It's not really news unless we get into the hundreds of thousands - and if that really is the level of information that has been leaked, it is not devastating.

    Mind you, I did receive a call from someone today claiming to be from "Windows". Apparently I have a problem with my computer, and if I just go to their web site, they will help me solve my problem. I wonder if Vodafone told them I have a problem?

      Or it's a targeted attack by a state actor, and they only accessed exactly what they needed.

    It doubt it's a hack of Vodafone at all. It's more likely this is the same bunch of users from the recent TalkTalk hack who use a common email/password across various sites, hence the reports of "2000 British Gas customers hacked" the other day too. Expect a similar story about "2000 customers hacked" tomorrow, and the day after and so on. Not that it will stop Slashdot posting it as "news"

    About the same number of accounts, a couple of thousand against the millions that Vodafone and British Gas must have. BG say it wasn't their systems that were breached. Sounds as if there's another database that's leaked, and some people who have re-used passwords across multiple accounts are having their credentials tried out across multiple sites.

    wow 2,000 accounts, very impressive when compared to the 13 million records from 000webhost or the 4 million from TalkTalk if i worked for Vodafone, I would be able to call those people from their call center in a few days.... that's not a hack.... that's just an inconvenience... especially since a third-party partner was hacked and not their own servers
