The Astronaut Hopeful's Manifesto (forbes.com)
StartsWithABang writes: Many of us dreamed of becoming astronauts as a child, but gave up on that dream for a number of reasons — the seemingly impossible odds, the demands of daily life, the rigors of preparation — and never even applied. But for a great many, that dream remains alive; the last time NASA had open applications, over 6,000 people threw their hat in the ring, with eight selected. Yesterday, NASA once again opened up astronaut applications, and one prospective applicant has written a manifesto about lessons learned in becoming an aspiring astronaut. While not all of us have the desire to strap ourselves to a rocket and orbit in a tin can above Earth, we all have something to learn from this perspective.
Write a blog, post every single article to Slashdot. Instant advertising win.
Can we please go back to the days where a post to Slashdot would knock a site offline from the internet?

FTFY.
Now isn't that funnier in some dialects?
I have an ad blocker enabled, and the site refuses to load - it shows a message asking me to disable my ad blocker. Not going to happen.
How do I work around this?
in case the space race coughs up even more bugs than have been foisted upon us unchosens already? spirit of creation is failproof... language of the heart is foolproof... truth~mercy=great escape,, in the moms we trust,,, our nearest known creators... shame on our wmd on credit attitude to our fellow spiritual & physical allys mostly kids,, wake up, read the teepeeleaks etchings...
Slashdot needs to come clean: how much is Forbes, HotHardware, HughPickens, etc paying you to get their "articles" posted? There is no way this junk is getting here based on merit via the Firehose. The Forbes articles won't even load with AdBlockers! They are getting really desperate.
American astronauts should be ashamed of themselves hitching rides with the Russians rockets to the White Elephant in the Sky.
big on the rockets red glare,, filter out the babys bursting in air... works for the wmd on credit cabals? you still (t)here ed? that's a good question?
Don't dream of being an astronaut. The environment is pretty hostile up there. If the need arise to serve my country, I will go without hesitation but dreaming about it seem a little over-fetched at first glance ;-)
Everything I write is lies, read between the lines.
The first step in failing is to try. That's the lesson.
welcome our new corporate overlords.

Nasty Ad-infected sites.
Wake up the next day and realize that NASA does not and will not have the budget or the technology to send you anywhere.
The posting is confusing. What exactly is a degree in "engineering technology" and why does that not qualify? How is that different from a degree in engineering?
As much hype as there is to have people apply to the astronaut program, NASA primarily selects from the military, which creates an inherent bias in the system. Look at the last astronaut class:
https://www.nasa.gov/astronaut...
75% of the class was military. All of the men were military. My point is not that it's impossible to become an astronaut with a civilian background, but that it's difficult because NASA has an institutional bias that favors the military. Most former astronauts were military, so they favor other military candidates. As such, that 0.1% selection number is both right and wrong. As a general number, it may be right. However, if we ask what's the probably of becoming an astronaut given that we're not a military officer, the number is actually much smaller.
