Tumblr Is Launching Live Video This Week (theverge.com)

An anonymous reader quotes a report from The Verge: Tumblr plans to compete in the fast-crowding live video space, according to a promotional webpage unearthed by Twitter user David Chartier over this past weekend. The page, livevideo.tumblr.com, features a programming schedule and a launch date of June 21st, though the date may not be set in stone. TechCrunch confirmed today the images are indeed Tumblr advertising material for the new platform. It's unclear how the company's live video ambitions will shape up, and whether it will resemble anything like Facebook Live, Twitter's Periscope, or Amazon-owned Twitch. In April, Facebook rolled out a major live video update allowing anyone to post live streams of themselves to their timeline.

What I'm seeing here is a rush for the major social networking players to provide live video streaming services to their user bases...but, the question is, why? How does that fit into their business models? I honestly don't see that it does in most cases.

This might be contrasted with the recent discussion Facebook will be all video. I can sort of understand how blog posts and their comments are being replaced by video recordings, though I'm not sure about the "why". In this sense, live video would be a natural replacement for live chat, but apparently that's not what's happening here. It's more like live broadcast, which would tie in with another recent discussion. That is, if "what I'm having for breakfast just now" counts as news.

Seems to me that a lot of social media sites know that the vast majority of their users are narcissistic shits who need their ego's stroked, giving them video just helps their self esteem.

Back a few years I had a chance to listen to one of Canada's top drug/crimlaw experts talk about social media. Or as he put it, "one of the best tools to catch criminals with evidence in hand." Can't speak for the US, but here in Canada clearance rates have increased because these people are so stupid they brag about what they've done.

Easiest way is to show off your breasts while simultaneously screeching that anyone looking at your breasts is somehow oppressing you. See also: Laci Green (who raped a ton of people). Making up words ("cis," "genderfluid," "microagression") also helps.

Bonus points if you act horrifically racist while claiming to fight racism ("All white people are racist!"), sexist while fighting sexism ("Don't mansplain to me, I Drink Male Tears!"), and insulting to the handicapped while fighting ableism. ("You autistic shitlord!" / "I identify as genderfluid, you truscum piece of shit").

Oh, and don't forget the pink hair dye, ugly ass glasses, and haircut that would prohibit you from applying to a real job.
