BitTorrent Adds Music, Video Streaming Options With Re-Launched BitTorrent Now (billboard.com)
Dan Rys, reporting for Billboard:As streaming continues to consolidate its foothold as a major force in the music-listening community, more and more players are getting into the increasingly crowded space. Today, BitTorrent announced it is adding an ad-supported streaming option to its BitTorrent Bundle offerings, which is officially re-launching as BitTorrent Now. But before anyone thinks the company is throwing its hat into the ring alongside Spotify, Apple Music and Tidal (or even Netflix and Hulu), BitTorrent Now isn't designed as a full-catalog competitor. Rather, its streaming component will be part of the distribution framework established with BitTorrent Bundle in 2013, giving artists who use its direct-to-fan platform the option to allow fans to stream their releases rather than download them. BitTorrent Now is currently available as an app on Android devices, with iOS and Apple TV apps on the horizon "shortly," according to a rep.
Do law-abiding citizens have access?
Ancient Egypt had locusts. USA has Baby Boomers. Is it too late to swap?
heh, he thinks i devices are on the horizon. That's so cute. Watch how fast they get kicked off the store if they accidentally make it on. For piracy or some such bs. =P
Someone needs to explain Digital Equipment Corporation to slashdot.
I was about to say the same thing.
Let me use this as a chance to invite all DEC veterans to report in. Tell us your war stories! We know you have them.
Tell us about your experience with the various PDP systems. Tell us your tales of VAXen and VMS. Tell us about Alpha. Tell us about Digital UNIX and OSF/1. Tell us about The Merger.
If you do that, at least you'll put this otherwise useless submission to good use!
I don't see mention of any new encryption to prevent the media companies/law enforcement from detecting downloads.
Support your local school shooter, give them your firearms.
Guys the "digital" logo for this is totally off. I can see for the history of posts in this "topic" that its pretty much being used for all things electronic media. I don't know if the "digital" topic was co-opted from being discussions about DEC or not. If it was fine it clearly happened a long time ago. Can we stop using the DEC logo though? Its seriously confusing and kinda of a sad use of a symbol that was once associated with something actually important to the history of the computing industry
Repeal the 17th Amendment TODAY! Also Please Read http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/right-to-read.html
Okay, this is the second time I've felt compelled to post this. Maybe this time it will gain traction?
Why is this article tagged with the logo for Digital Equipment Corporation? Using this logo for completely unrelated stories seems to be a trend lately on Slashdot.
Editors, PLEASE note that the "digital" logo applies to a specific company, and many of your readers have been around long enough to know that. Using the logo incorrectly suggests that the editors are not in touch with the topics we're interested in reading about.
With a colon inserted and spaces removed. Maybe it's just my POS work IE 11.
Was living next door to a fellow 4-5 years ago who told me they were still using VAX computers where he worked (Michelin Tire in Nova Scotia) and there was no plan to replace them. Not exactly on topic, but what is here anyways. Streaming with bit torrent .... yawn ... sound of crickets.
> Using the logo incorrectly suggests that the editors are not in touch with the topics we're interested in reading about. /. got bought by a "lifestyle" "content production" company. You *honestly* thought that they'd be in touch with the topics that they write about?
What did you expect if they outsourced editorial duties to "manish"?
Actually pretty ironic that a community that is so outspoken about offshoring is now managed from some third world shithole.
Does it feature encrypted micro-sharding so that I have the file but it didn't take up any space? So it's no where and everywhere?
Slashdot's rate-of-post filter: Preventing you from posting too many great ideas at once.
the editor on this is a 'manishs', he's obviously editing this from an outsourcing center in India. Why, English might be his 30th language! (Yes I know English is actually the primary 'exchange' language in India.)
But more seriously, what do you expect, the last original editor got laid off last year. Probably nobody still working at slashdot is out of their 20s now, and anybody that young has probably never heard of DEC, thinks of the Gateway guy or Steve Jobs when they think of computers, and has been social networking for so long they have a blank expression on their face any time you speak the words 'expectation of privacy' to them.
> before anyone thinks the company is throwing its hat into the ring alongside Spotify, Apple Music and Tidal (or even Netflix and Hulu),
Bittorrent protocol itself is awesome. Bittorrent the company and bittorrent the client software are not the best. Any Linux user will attest to this.
I had a DEC PPRO200 personal workstation and now I can't get support from DEC anymore because they somehow excluded themselves from Archive.org. Bastards!
