Google Global Cache Is Coming to Cuba (ap.org)
"The Associated Press reports that on Monday Eric Schmidt will be in Havana to sign a deal bringing Google Global Cache to Cuba," writes lpress. Here's some details from the AP's report on the deal.
Cuba suffers from some of the world's slowest internet speeds due to a range of problems that include the convoluted, and thus slower, paths that data must travel between Cuban users and servers that are often in the U.S... home internet connections remain illegal for virtually all Cubans, forcing them to use public WiFi spots that are often shared by dozens of people at a time and run at achingly slow speeds... Both pro-detente forces and those arguing for a hard line on President Raul Castro's single-party government have been pushing for Cubans to have better access to information.
The article cites Slashdot reader Larry Press as "a California-based expert on the Cuban internet," who also shares some more thoughts on his blog. "I'd love to see a country -- even a small one -- in which Google Plus was more popular than Facebook."

The best map I could find was a 2015 test that found 2383 "cache instances" in 800 locations around the globe.
I'm just wondering if we're headed to a future where the third world surf the web on Google's internet, while Google silently monitors their traffic to help calculating their page rankings.
Before they had information filtered and warped by the Castro regime, now they'll have information filtered and warped by Google...

were people would just piss on both Google and Facebook.
You may not believe it, but Larry Press has a lot of pull.
Who does lpress first blame on Cuban internet slowness?
Not the fact that internet connections are illegal for the vast majority of Cubans.
Not the fact that they can only get it through a small number of overburdened public WiFi hot spots who's connections are slow to begin with.
No. As usual, The Liberal Blames America First.
Who needs fake news when distortion is soooo much more effective, and has the benefit of being... true?

The word is "dictatorship". Or, if you prefer: "tyranny".

The only title of honor that a tyrant can grant is "Enemy of the State."
and you should not let U.S. political missions get any control over your communications.
Is Cuban internet service routed through Europa or something? Because it's hard to come up with of a terrestrial path which would add a noticeable delay, in and of itself.

Oh, i can think of only one. how about a 60 year embargo imposed by the United states and maintained solely as a talisman for other states to gaze into should they have the audacity to challenge or refuse Washingtons foreign policy. What cuba did was nothing short of goddamn heresy in the early sixties. While most south american countries enjoyed rule by one of washingtons satellite plutocrats, Castro had the gall to thumb his nose at more than a dozen attempts on his life. While Nicaraguan families cowered from American Contra soldiers, Castro nationalized industry and expanded healthcare. And when america realized their last entry into central and south american politics was through Cuba, they acquiesced and suddenly became best friendos with a nation that has almost never shared the policy of profiteering Google seeks to introduce.
Good people go to bed earlier.
I'm glad to see that Cuba's internet is finally getting some attention. Here in Cuba, New Mexico it's really hard to get any research done when we have to fight for connectivity with all our friends and family lined up in front of the library. I guess it's a chance to get together and gossip a little. BTW, Raul Castro is not the president. As manager of the feed store, he plays an important role in our village, true, but he's not the president. Did he say he was? Maybe I'll read the article and find out, but my time on the internet has expired and mi abuela will get my slot. Oh well.
If the number of people allowed to access the internet is limited, that would mean that those allowed get a greater fraction of the available bandwidth.
Why do you hate the Pigeonhole Principle?
I thought U.S. businesses were barred form doing business in or with Cuba, save for a very small few exceptions.
How is it that Eric can be signing deals and installing a PoP in Cuba without repercussion?
One thing I do know is that Cuba's internet "woes" are created ENTIRELY by Cuba's government and their choice to restrict its citizens access. But sure, be a Castro propaganda mouthpiece and blame America for it.
Is America the only country on the planet besides Cuba? What do you suppose stops Cuba from doing business with any and every other country on the face of the Earth. Why does Cuba need America or American trade at all?
Only one thing stops Cuba from doing business with all the other countries of the world. That ONE thing is that Cuba fails to and/or is unable to pay its bills. Cuba can and does do limited business with the likes of Canada, China, Venezuela, Brazil, U.K. France, Mexico, India, and many more smaller players. But, Cuba's inability to pay its debts makes these countries less willing to do much business with Cuba.
It all centers around Cuba's Castro government. The same government that traps its citizens, denies them access to the internet, is incapable of growing enough food despite some of the most fertile land in the world... The same government that only two years ago finally made it legal for Cuban citizens to own microwave ovens, FFS!
Cuba blames all their woes on America, and clueless idiots like you parrot the Castro propaganda about it being all America's fault.
But that's 100% bullshit. Cuba trades freely with nearby neighbors, including Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. Cuba can, and probably does get internet from Cayman and or Jamaica, highspeed submarine cables service both Islands. But, Castro doesn't permit his people to have internet, certainly not in their homes. No satellite TV either. The Castros can't have the peasants find out the truth about the outside world. He doesn't need more of them escaping(their own words) on rubber inner tubes.
Get a clue asshat.

Yes. That's why it's slow. It couldn't be for any other reason at all. Just convoluted paths....

Has the person who wrote this ever been to Cuba?
I've been to Cuba a couple of months ago.
Before traveling I read in numerous places that there is almost NO internet is Cuba, that the internet speed is soooo slow you cannot surf anywhere, etc.
Guess what? Yes, internet is not widely available (mostly major plazas, hotels, post office), BUT wherever it was available the speed was more than adequate. I was able to easily upload a bunch of pictures to Facebook in less than a minute and a 2min HD video in a few minutes!
