Hobbyist Turns Nintendo 64 Console Into Nintendo Switch Dock (polygon.com)

adosch writes: Polygon reports that a Reddit user "modified a broken Nintendo 64 and transformed it into a functioning Switch dock." The modder, who goes by the handle "Tettzan Zone," has "been keeping fellow Switch fans updated on his adventures in console customization on Reddit, sharing the steps he took to making the entire Nintendo 64 workable as a dock." He was going to use an NES console for the dock, but he didn't want to have to blow on the Switch every time he went to dock it.

He could have used a banana peel as a dock. Or correct me if I'm wrong, but he isn't using any of the electronics of the N64. It's just likea cup holder. An N64 cup holder.

I don't see any impressing aspects in this. One could make a Switch stand out of a cardboard box and it would have a similar level of complexity as this one.

At least with fat PS2s, they might just need the "white gear" adjusted. Sony used a cheap nylon gear for (IIRC) a lens height adjustment, and it would go out of adjustment with time.

You could drill a hole in your PS2's and turn them into cup holders. It would be a feat comparable to this N64 mod.

The pic he posted on the thread looks like he used an old N64 powerbrick as a chassis, not the N64 itself. Also it appears he just stuck the innards of a real Switch dock into this, perhaps because it's a more convenient form factor or something. Does not appear to be anywhere as interesting as the /. summary indicated. He's not modding N64 hardware to somehow be used by the Switch. Correct me if I'm wrong.

boring why? just look at the teardown of the dock. it's literally just a breakout box and a charger.

now if he modded the usb connector to be on the side or the top or the behind of the switch then yay...

Good callout & good question. I have your answer.

His 'mod' (as you rightly noticed) is hardly a mod at all BUT what he did was his version to a lot of folks complaining about one thing:
      - When inserting the switch into its native dock, the screen would get scratched because of very tight spacing tolerances.

--> So he used an N-64 body to hold the dock's electrical innards, and drops his switch into the cartridge slot's much wider spacing. That's it. --

Now what made it so 'viral' and hipster, etc, is less an effort on his part and more like the natural reaction the internet has to any thing ever. In other words, the internet upgrades any story into mega-story :D

Oh, plus the matching greys make it more attractive & 'sick' than say, a decorative plastic tissue-box frame.
