US Lifts Laptop Restriction For Flights From Abu Dhabi (reuters.com)

The United States has lifted a ban on laptops in cabins on flights from Abu Dhabi to the United States, saying Etihad Airways had put in place required tighter security measures. From a report: Etihad welcomed the decision on Sunday and credited a facility at Abu Dhabi International Airport where passengers clear U.S. immigration before they land in the United States for "superior security advantages" that had allowed it to satisfy U.S. requirements. Transportation Security Administration officials have checked that the measures had been implemented correctly, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). U.S. officials assessed the airport on Saturday night, Abdul Majeed al-Khoori, acting chief executive of operator Abu Dhabi Airports told Reuters on Monday. The disruption to passengers from the new measures will be "very minimal" with the processing time for those traveling to the United States unchanged, he said by phone.

    I cancelled my vacation to the US this fall, after they wanted to ban electronics as carry on. No way I am putting my expensive cameras and computer in checked. I hadn't booked a flight yet but I had rented a house, so there was minimal damage done.
    Maybe next year? I hope.

      Sure my friend I can vouch for you and you can come visit me in sicilicon valley USA you can stay in my studio its not like I have plenty of friends hoping to see you soon I have a 100$ camera and plenty of electronics and a raid 5+1 with 18 hard drives set up so you dont need to bring yours.

      Then you don't know how professional photographers think. A quick search found a list of cameras that are $1k+. I have 3 friends who are photographers (two professional and one amateur), they all have $3k+ camera and other expensive lens. Not all photos need to be reproduced on a computer. Many photographers are proud of their skills and equipments.

      Reinforced cockpit doors and passenger intervention have stopped attacks.

      $50B for body scanners and double-digit IQ screeners have done nothing.

      If they have done something worthwhile, it would behoove them to advertise it and justify their existence.

    This whole laptop ban thing was a front to get countries to accept the remote American security points in their airports. If you don't - laptop ban. If you do - no laptop ban.

    In general, using the remote ones (I've the one on Canada) is much better than going the passport and security points at international arrivals in an American airport. So that's a marginal improvement. But best of all would be having passport and security controls that didn't suck.

      What better way to infiltrate other countries than to have your security people allowed to roam free in them? Canada generally frowns on guns but allows american "security" forces to open-carry them in Canada. WTF?!

      US passport controls don't suck in the least if you have Global Entry or Nexus. I just flew through Canada and breezed through security and the passport preclear zone in the airport without waiting in either line. Passport control was literally scanning my prints and passport, printing a receipt, and showing it to a guard who waved me through, with zero waiting in any line.

      If you travel more than once a year, you probably already have Global Entry or Nexus, and you know how absolutely awesome those are.
