Vitamin B3 Supplement Can Prevent Miscarriages and Birth Defects, Says Study (news.com.au)
brindafella writes: The landmark finding about vitamin B3, made by the Victor Chang Institute in Sydney, Australia, has been described as "the most important discovery for pregnant women since folate." The study has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine. From News.com.au: "The historic discovery, believed to be among Australia's greatest ever medical achievements, is expected to forever change the way pregnant women are cared for around the globe. Every year 7.9 million babies are born with a birth defect worldwide and one in four pregnant women suffer a miscarriage in Australia. In the vast majority of cases the cause of these problems has remained a mystery. Until now. Professor Sally Dunwoodie from the Victor Chang Institute has identified a major cause of miscarriages as well as heart, spinal, kidney and cleft palate problems in newborn babies. The landmark study found that a deficiency in a vital molecule, known as NAD, prevents a baby's organs from developing correctly in the womb. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) is one of the most important molecules in all living cells. NAD synthesis is essential for energy production, DNA repair and cell communication. Disrupting its production causes a NAD deficiency. The Victor Chang researchers have found this deficiency is particularly harmful during a pregnancy as it cripples an embryo when it is forming. At the heart of the paramount discovery is the dietary supplement vitamin B3, also known as niacin. Scientists at the Victor Chang Institute have discovered how to prevent miscarriages and birth defects by simply boosting levels of the nutrient during pregnancy."
This is massive overstatement and we need to wait for some human evidence.

Nicotine can be oxidised to nicotinic acid (niacin)

Was created by Margaret Sanger for the purpose of eugenics so of course they're willing to help you get rid of a genetically-inferior baby. That was the very reason they were created for.
Isn't that the outfit that pioneered selling stripped-down black electronic components to audiophiles for top dollar?
And for all these years, I thought smoking while pregnant was bad. The tobacco industry is going to love this study.
And end it nooooow!
TRUMP powa!
Especially in math class with straight lines n curves, elliptical , Central point..n all disturbs all my wild calculations, resulting suppressed ejaculation..
I guess we all knew it would eventually come to this: Slashdot hawking supplements.

Prevent !!? how is that suppose to help me now...
Why was this voted down for telling the truth?
Isn't the just a politically incorrect way of describing a female baby?
All babies are genetically inferior to adults. Lamarckism proves this!
For all the newly pregnant mothers-to-be - - - pre-natal vitamins are NOT a joke - they are a vital necessity for your child's health and welfare ! ! !

Hey there, if something as complex as miscarriage has a "simple" solution of adding B3 in your diet, it's probably not properly researched and verified. Not saying that B3 may or may not have some benefit, but it is EXTREMELY likely that it does not prevent miscarriage as a whole.

Still take your pre-natal vitamins please, even while you're trying to conceive :)
My personal experience with nicotinamide (A form of B3) has being amazing, saved my father from arthritis (his 90)
he could only work 50ft and barely close his hands, and was in constant pain, after 4 months on nicotinamide, his back walking 1.2 Miles every day
and can close his hand's.. I have a number of other friends who are now on nicotinamide, arfter seeing the his results. And there are all showing benefits too.
It may be only Anecdotal evidence, but at the end of the day, what else matter's ?
So if would not surprise me at lest if there was a drop in birth defects.
Niacin can give a great buzz when combined with your drug of choice.
Of course, you don't have to combine it with any drug.
It dilates the capillaries giving an all-over warm flush. And I do mean WARM.
If you've never done it before, it can scare the crap out of you.
You need at least 100mg of niacin NOT niacinamide.
It's cheap, no prescription required and available at any drug store.
Also great if you can't warm up on a cold day.
Try it - you can thank me later.

This isn't news. It isn't ground breaking. We've heard this before. In fact, discussions on this topic shifted long ago from if niacin is good to take during pregnancy... to how much is safe. We all know eating right is important. We all know a balanced diet is key... niacin is in a LOT of foods... and you really only need trace amounts, as with most vitamins and minerals... even during pregnancy. Here's a quick breakdown of some foods with niacin --- (1) Turkey. 1 breast: 101 mg (over 100% DV), (2) Chicken breast. 3 oz: 8.9 mg (44% DV), (3) Peanuts. 1 cup: 21.9 mg (over 100% DV), (4) Mushrooms. 1 cup: 7.6 mg (34% DV), (5) Liver. 1 slice: 11.9 mg (60% DV), (6) Tuna. 3 oz: 11.3 mg (56% DV), (7) Green peas. 1 cup: 3 mg (15% DV), (8) Grass-fed Beef. So be it.
There can NEVER be enough warnings and sound medical advice to give to ANY expectant mother.
I'll take the hit gracefully.
I just hope it gets to at least ONE more new mother-to-be and gets her to take the proper nutritional care of her developing child.
cheers

Vitamin supplements are not nutrition.
It is a massive overstatement to say that birth defects are going to be prevented. Did anyone here read the article? I did. This is still in the realm of science and optimism and hypothesis. 1. researchers looked at genes in human family members of those with multiple congenital anomalies, found some genetic stuff, speculated genetic issues could have caused birth defects (and maybe miscarriages) and could be fixed by increased NAD (Niacin, Vit B3) 2. researches put the speculated problematic genes with CRISPR technology into mice. 3. supplementing mice with NAD (Niacin, a.k.a. B3) reduced birth defects That's it. There are a lot of hypotheses and assumptions here, and not a single human miscarriage or birth defect has been prevented yet. This article is great for forming hypotheses like "we oughtta test women/couples for these genes" or "we oughtta give pregnant women vit B3 supplements". But until we actually do these medical studies testing these ideas, we know nothing and have not advanced human health. -- Josh (yes, I am a doctor and I practice obstetrics and I'm not recommending any additional supplementation with Vit B3 until we have outcomes evidence in humans)
Vitamin B3 is found in Meat.
