Galaxy Note 8 Sets New Pre-Order Record For Samsung Despite Last Year's Disaster (theverge.com)

An anonymous reader quotes a report from The Verge: The Note brand is still going strong despite Samsung recalling and discontinuing Note 7 devices last year for battery explosions. The company today announced that more customers in the U.S. have preordered the Note 8 than any other Notes it has ever sold in previous years during the same time period. Note 8 preorders went live on August 24th and the device is one of Samsung's most expensive smartphones to date, starting at $930. It's unapologetically pricey, though Samsung did attempt to offset that price tag with some presale offers. Samsung did not specify exactly how many Note 8 preorders it has received so far, but judging by how popular Note 7s were last year before everything went down, it seems that little has deterred Note fans from upgrading -- not even the price tag.

Rumors were accurate so I don't regret the decision, and I saved about $400. A 0.1" larger screen was not worth the extra cost, considering I never used the stylus.

There is something to be said for the tactile feel of handwriting, I know sometimes I need to just grab a pad of paper and write things down to work through a problem.

Google Pixel phone is supposed to be a cutting edge device to lead the Android market forward. Yet here is Samsung, and even the software on Samsungs leaves Google's devices for dust, (the hardware you can't even come close) to. e.g. Dex, drop the phone into a cradle and it turns into a windowing system with mouse and keyboard like desktop experience. Multipane shortcuts, it's pathetic that my tablet flips into portrait mode for messaging. Far superious stylus support, a mass of superior software. Features. feature features.

So, we're in delusional stage, where Google thinks its still the leader of Android, and it's a split point where the Chinese have their own trial versions to rival Samsung. HARDLY ANYONE IS FOLLOWING GOOGLE. Xiaomi's A1 overpriced phone aside. This is a split point because the Chinese can simply split off and ditch Google and add all the features Google won't or can't and render Google irrelevant. You think Google control Google play so you control Android phones, yet how many of those Google play apps are yours Google? They'll go where the phones go.

Remember how stagnant Windows became? How Ballmer didn't have a clue. Then Google took their mobile market and was soon to take the tablet and laptop market too, but then they stopped. Pixel C came out, it was fucking useless, it was a large tablet that behaved like a large phone. The software in no way handled the large screen. It had no support for stylus work, it was effectively a fisher price phone. Large version of a everything, big buttons, a childs toy of a tablet. The software guys did not deliver a tablet, they delivered a large phone. That was 2015.

It's late 2017 and hardly any progress. So how exactly do Google lead the market. None of these users are pre-ordering the newest 'pixel' thing. Google clearly needs a wakeup call.

And here's Samsung, with $1000 phablet with all these features, and they fly off the shelves, customers love them, because they deliver features customers want, and Google deliver features Google wants. That Chrome OS integration, how many customers wanted that? Are pre-orders of your hybrid tablets so great?? The trackpad it adds, did anyone want that? Do you make software for your own amusement Google or for customers?

Which is another point; new phones are IP67 or whatever compliant. Waterproof down to several meters. Oh, and btw, that feature ensures that you can no longer replace the battery. Which dies after 2+ years!

I have NEVER needed a waterproof phone. It is a very nice feature. But NOT at the cost of avoiding planned obsolescence. I want to be able to replace my battery.

It should be a legal requirement that the user can replace the battery. And if the can't, the company should be legally required to replace the battery for no more than 5% of price of the original device, for at least 10 years.
